08/01/2016 How Young Authors Are Publishing... by Texting?

Text messaging has come to encompass a huge variety of communication, but did you know that it has even been used to publish novels? A rising genre known as the cell phone novel is a type of microfiction-based novel that is written on a cell phone and published in a series of text messages.

The cell phone novel first emerged in Japan, where the first such novel was written in 2003 by a Tokyo author using the name Yoshi. This novel, called "Deep Love," considered the practice of compensated dating in Japan. Many other early text message novels were romantic fiction of some form, addressing a range of themes such as love and relationships.

07/29/2016 How Texting Is Helping Victims of Violence Across the World

One of the first things many of us do in an emergency situation is text our loved ones, but what if we can't? Often, in instances of attacks, abduction, and other violent acts, the impulse to reach for our phones subsides to the impulse to defend ourselves, and scarcely in such situations are victims even able to access their phones. Thankfully, numerous developers and organizations have found ways to put texting to use to help victims of violence, whether or not they are able to reach for their phones.

One powerful use of texting to combat violence is the work of Xin-Chi Chin, a young Malaysian woman who herself survived a violent attack and kidnapping attempt by two men in 2012.

07/25/2016 Consumers want text message reminders for prescribed medications, Locent and Google survey finds

One third of U.S. consumers are interested in receiving text message reminders from their doctors to take prescribed medicine, according to the Locent Text Adherence Survey, in which the mHealth technology vendor polled 1,000 consumers with help from Google.

Millennials are the age demographic most interested in text reminders from doctors, the survey found. And 39 percent of consumers ages 18-24 years old said they were interested in receiving text message reminders from their doctors to take prescribed medicine. More than 31 million Americans make up that age group; consequently, that would mean 12 million consumers ages 18-24 years old are interested in receiving these reminders. That compares with only 22 percent of consumers ages 55–64 years old, the survey said.

07/22/2016 Text Messaging Creates Unique Brain Waves

Some people say that technologies like the internet are changing the way we think. This claim is now supported by evidence from neuroscience: a unique pattern of neural oscillations — better known as brain waves — appears when people are text messaging.

Researchers led by neurologist William Tatum at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, examined brain waves in electroencephalography (EEG) readings from 129 patients over 16 months. Their new study, published in the journal Epilepsy & Behavior, involved asking people to carry-out a variety of sensory-motor and cognitive tasks associated with communication.

The researchers recorded EEGs as patients wrote text messages or performed finger and thumb movements without a smartphone. They were also monitored while making telephone calls and doing activities that require concentration, such as mental calculations and speech or language tasks.

This past spring, parents of nearly two dozen 4-year-olds in Head Start and preschool classes in Teton and Sublette counties took part in an early literacy text messaging pilot program via a partnership among the University of Wyoming Literacy Research Center and Clinic, CEPA Labs at Stanford University and the Children’s Learning Center.

This fall, the program is poised to go statewide as part of many preschool, Head Start and library offerings.

The program provides parents with three text messages a week. The texts offer ways for parents to engage in early literacy activities as part of their daily routines -- for example, asking their children to name letters and letter sounds on a shampoo bottle during bath time.
