Pew Internet found American cell phone owners sent
an average of 41.5 text messages per day last spring
and 73 percent of Americans with a cell phone used
the texting function. Thats a big jump from 2009,
when we sent an average of 29.7 texts daily, but only
a tiny increase over the 39.1 sent last year.

Brawls |
Have you ever got into a text message fight? You
furiously type into your phone, thumbs punctuating
each letter as your third eye wrinkles with rage.
But then you have to wait for whomever you are fighting
with to reply with their text venom. Although you
don't want to lose the momentum of your anger, it
is boring just staring at your phone waiting to continue
your wrath.

Fresh Fruit |
Here is how the marketplace works: A buyer texts
their inventory (say, 20 apples) to a list of buyers.
A nearby buyer types list and gets a list of
everything being sold in the area. The service uses
GPS to locate buyers and sellers, so nearby produce
is highlighted. When a buyer is ready to make a purchase,
the seller receives a text with the buyers phone number
and deletes their items from the inventory list.

Helping in Clinical Trials |
More than 30% of patients drop out of clinical research
studies, costing the pharmaceutical industry hundreds
of millions of dollars per year. The problem
is compounded by the fact that 40% of patients who
remain in the studies are non-compliant with the protocol
visit schedule, resulting in additional costs and
delays. These problems can be avoided if
sponsors accelerate adoption of currently available
texting solutions used to remind patients of their
upcoming visits.

Helps Lose Weight |
Teens love text messages--and those texts may help
them lose weight, if they are done right. A study
tested out various types of weight management-themed
text messages on overweight teens to see what they
liked, finding that they favored positive messages
but disliked thoughtful questions.
Overweight and obese teens can be a tough crowd when
it comes to weight-loss interventions--many have a
tough time adopting more healthful diet and exercise
routines. Researchers from the University of Michigan
thought tailored text messages might be a good way
to help teens adopt lifestyle changes, since texts
have been successful in helping others drop bad habits.

Call List for Texting |
Telemarketers cannot talk to Wisconsinites who are
on the state’s do-not-call list. And
a GOP lawmaker says those sellers should not be sending
text messages, either.
Senate Republican Van Wangaard of Racine is drafting
a bill to include text messages in the no-call law.
He says many cell phone customers have to pay for
those messages – and they should not
be paying for unwanted sales pitches. Wangaard says
his bill would bring the law into the 21st century.

Struggling with Free Text Messaging |
Remember the days of expensive and limiting data
plans? When calling out of state cost big bucks? And
forget about international calls, who had that kind
of money? Oh, how things have changed…
Popular programs like Skype allows for free face-to-face
calls all over the world, while cell phones have conquered
national long-distance fees. The new frontier: Text
messaging fees.
For now, text data plans mean customers can text their
thumbs to the bone for one fixed monthly cost, while
for others a $10 for 1,000 texts per month plan will
do just fine. Alas, even that cost is destined to
disappear. Free is the operative word, and companies
are lining up to provide you with their free and unlimited
texting services. The days of texting plans are numbered.

Use for SMS in India |
Pharma companies in the country may be asked to install
an SMS-activated system to counter fake drugs in the
market. Companies will need to print a unique number
on medicine strips which the buyers can SMS to the
customer care for verification.
Recommendations of a task force report expected on
Friday will make it mandatory for drug-manufacturing
companies to have the software that will respond to
text messages from consumers. Unique ID and bar-coding
are the other options before the task force and will
be weighed against SMS alerts, task force chairman
HG Koshia told ET.

08/29/2011 The Death
of the Text Message |
Interesting commentary on the Death of the
Text Message:
The smartphone boom is a mixed blessing for wireless
companies. While the devices have boosted data plan
sales considerably, they are threatening to kill another
revenue stream dead in its tracks: text messaging.
Dozens of smartphone applications offer free
text messaging services, which allow wireless customers
to send and receive texts by piggybacking on their
existing data plans.

I think more and more companies are going to take
control of their own messaging, rather than relying
on a third party, which bodes well for PageGate.
