02/11/2015 How Your
Phone Can Make Driving Safer |
As much as we love our phones, their widespread use
has a number of negative consequences, and the fact
that almost one in four car collisions involve cell
phones is a particularly grave one. However, many
innovators have responded to this danger, developing
technologies that aim to reduce the role of cell phones
in distracted driving. These devices and applications
serve to build understanding of the perils of distracted
driving as well as to fight drivers' urges to use
their phones on the road.

a New Tool in the Fight to Prevent Skin Cancer |
Funded by Cancer Australia, the 12-month trial targeted
individuals aged between 18 and 42 - an age group
in which mobile phone use is almost universal - and
the results have just been published in international
journal Preventative Medicine.
A Queensland-first, the Healthy Text trial tested
the impact and value of SMS-delivered messages promoting
sun protection along with skin self-examination for
early detection of skin cancer, while a third group
received texts encouraging physical activity.
Weekly texts for the first 12 weeks were followed
by monthly text messages for another nine months and
a final in-depth telephone interview was conducted.

02/20/2015 Can a
Text Message Help Bridge the Word Gap for Low Income
Children? |
Studies show that by age four, kids from low-income
households will hear 30 million less words than their
more affluent counterparts, who get more quality face-time
with caretakers. That means the already disadvantaged
are falling behind before the academic race has even
begun. Educators have so far been largely unsuccessful
when it comes to finding ways to bridge the so-called
word gap.
But researchers at Stanford University think they
may have found a solution.

Not Yet a Standard in Doctors Office |
A new survey from Salesforce of 1,700 American adults
shows that most are satisfied with the care they receive
from their physicians, despite fairly limited adoption
of online tools to communicate with their doctors.
Less than 10 percent of those surveyed said they use
the web, email or text to set up appointments, compared
to 76 percent that still do so over the phone and
25 percent that schedule their appointments in person.

02/02/2015 Verizon
is Discontinuing Support for TAP! |
Verizon is discontinuing support for its TAP service
effective 2/2/2015. If you have the Verizon TAP system
configured in NotePager Pro or PageGate, this configuration
will no longer function.
To quote Verizons support page:
Beginning 01/31/2015 we will no longer offer support
for TAP (Telelocator Alphanumeric Protocol). If you
are using a modem-based 1-800 TAP service to send
text messages through our network, contact your business
sales team for support.
If you or your organization are not part of an Emergency
Management Service, unfortunately, this only leaves
SMTP as a viable protocol for delivering messages
to Verizon cell phones and you will need to update
your configuration from TAP to SMTP.
If you or your organization are part of an Emergency
Management Service, you can register on the Verizon
Enterprise Messaging Access Gateway (EMAG, for short)
by contacting your organization, city, county, state
or regional Verizon Representative and requesting
their assistance to register. Once the registration
is complete, this will provide you with access to
use SNPP, WCTP or SMTP to deliver your messages.

01/30/2015 New Role
of Cell Phone in Politics |
With the expansion of cell phones into so many aspects
of our lives, it's hardly surprising that cell phones
are playing a growing role in the political sphere.
A huge majority of 88% of American voters own cell
phones, 27% of whom have used their devices for politics-related
purposes. While it is clear that the relationship
between cell phones and politics has grown to be significant,
it is less immediately evident what, exactly, the
new role of cell phones in politics is.
