No matter how many lives are lost in texting-related car crashes, some people will still text while they drive. Even though 34 states have outlawed texting while driving, according to an October ghsa.org report, Edgarsnyder.com reported that at any given moment there are 812,000 vehicles being operated by drivers using a cell phone.

10/26/2011 LAX Smuggling Ring Broken Up

Authorities have revealed text messages used by two people involved in an alleged marijuana smuggling ring at Los Angeles International Airport.

The son of a former Los Angeles fire chief was charged Monday with bribing a federal Transportation Security Administration officer at LAX to help him smuggle about 14 pounds of marijuana past security on nine separate trips.

A simple text message led to a meth bust in Lawrence County.

State Police say a retired police officer received a text message asking if he would like to purchase meth or heroin. The officer contacted State Trooper Josh Allen, a member of ISPs Meth Suppression Team, who then set up a meeting with the dealer through the retired officers cell phone.

- Ladies text more, but only just. Women sent 42 texts per day to the guys 41.
- The 18 to 29 set loves. Ninety-five percent of cell phone owners in that age bracket send texts, and they average 88 per day. The median number is 40.
- Folks older than 65 send a mere five texts per day.
- Almost one in four 18-29 year olds sends or receives upwards of 100 texts per day. The 12 percent with bionic thumbs send or receive more than 200 daily.
-The higher your education level, the less you text: Those with less than high school education average 70 texts per day. College grads average 24 texts per day
- Text messaging and voice calling are related: Those who text the most also tend to make the most voice calls.

10/17/2011 Political Contributions via Text Message

The ability to contribute to your favorite California political candidates will soon be just a text message away, after the states ethics agency took a step Thursday to bring campaigning into the 21st century.

The state Fair Political Practices Commission voted to allow contributions by text message as long as the candidates report the identity and address of those giving more than $100. The new regulation will take effect in about 30 days, and then campaigns and phone-plan carriers will have to take action to set up the contributing-by-texting systems.

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association recently announced that in Q1 Canadians sent 18 billion text messages. March had the highest stats in history with just over 6 billion, or an average of 199 million messages per day.

Sexting is becoming more common among college students. According to a study done by Michelle Drouin, an assistant professor of psychology at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, 745 U.S. college students aged 18-25 suggest that sexting is a popular means of sexual communication between committed romantic relationships and casual sexual relationships.

The study showed that 80 percent of students with committed romantic partners have sent or received sexually explicit text messages and 60 percent have sent or received sexually explicit pictures or videos. With casual sexual partners such as, flings or hookups, not boyfriends or girlfriends, 70 percent have sent or received sexually explicit text messages and 51 percent have sent or received explicit pictures or videos.

10/06/2011 Texting Stats Vary by Age Demographic

A study from the Pew Research Center has quantified what anyone who walks through the Quad likely already knows — young people use text messaging more than twice as frequently as older adults.

Young adults send and receive an average of 109.5 messages each day, while the entire adult population exchanges an average of only 41.5 messages per day according to a study released last week.

NorthJersey.com announces its new text-based service that sends local high school sports scores directly to fans cell phones. The service will initially launch with football scores and include public, private and parochial high schools across northern New Jersey.

10/05/2011 Dept of HHS Implements Texting Program

The Department of Health and Human Services will use its massive stores of health information to develop wellness and prevention campaigns using text messaging to target specific populations.

The programs are modeled, in part, after the Text4Baby public health campaign of the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition. Under Text4Baby, pregnant women and new mothers sign up for the service by texting BABY to 511411, and receive pertinent free text messages. As of June 2011, about 185,000 women had enrolled in Text4Baby and received 15 million texts.

As of last Saturday, it is now illegal for the driver of a vehicle to engage in any sort of text messaging while behind the wheel in the State of Maryland.

This includes checking and reading text messages while at a stop light or while the vehicle is stopped for any reason.

If you own a cellphone – 83% of American adults do – chances are that you send and receive text messages. And if you are a teenager, you may prefer texting to talking.

That is according to a recent study by the Pew Research Center.

Among cellphone owners, 73% of them text. And the younger the user, the more they text, the study found.

Pew Internet found American cell phone owners sent an average of 41.5 text messages per day last spring and 73 percent of Americans with a cell phone used the texting function. Thats a big jump from 2009, when we sent an average of 29.7 texts daily, but only a tiny increase over the 39.1 sent last year.

The service uses GPS to locate buyers and sellers, so nearby produce is highlighted. When a buyer is ready to make a purchase, the seller receives a text with the buyers phone number and deletes their items from the inventory list.
