Losing to Social Media? |
Text messaging may be going the way of the LP, and
social media might be to blame for the decline in
SMS in a more-connected-than-ever world.
Text messaging came to prominence in the early to
mid-00s, as people realized they did not have to actually
get on the phone to pass on a brief message to a friend,
colleague or family member. Soon text messaging supplanted
phone calls as the preferred method of communication
between connected individuals, with the exception
of a few texting abstainers who remained insistant
that the process was confusing, annoying or inconvenient.

A new proposal is working its way through Washington,
D.C. to archive peoples text messages.
Police are backing the proposal. They want wireless
companies to keep detail records of your texts for
two years to aid in possible investigations.
As of 2010, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint did not
keep the content of text messages. Verizon did for
five days, Virgin Mobile did for 90.

Harvard scientists are reporting that a case of so-called
dystextia clued them in that a 25-year-old
pregnant woman had suffered a stroke and was in need
of urgent medical care.
A healthy woman who was 11 weeks pregnant was communicating
with her husband via text following a routine visit
to her obstetrician's office -- she wanted to let
him know the babys due date. However, the messages
were incoherent.

12/17/2012 Volume
of Text Messages |
Pew Research just looked into the texting habits
of American adults and surprise: people like to text.
What is not to love, right? The fact that you do not
have to actually speak to another human being is reason
enough to peck away at that keyboard. That is not
my opinion – I’m just imagining that is what heavy
texters would say…
Anyway, motivations aside, Pew found that on average,
Americans over the age of 18 send and receive 41.5
texts per day. Women are a bit more text-happy than
men, but not by much 42 to 40.9. As you may expect,
those aged 18-29 tip the scale with an average of
87.7 texts per day. On the flip side, text messaging
seniors - 65 and older only send and receive 4.7 texts
on average.

2 Decades Old |
This month marks the 20th anniversary of the short
message service. It's better known by its abbreviation
SMS and best known by its everyday name: text message.
The first message was sent Dec. 3, 1992, by Neil Papworth,
an engineer for Sema Group in the United Kingdom.
"Merry Christmas popped up on the screen of
the big cellphone carried by Richard Jarvis, a director
for Vodafone.
Today, about 7 trillion text messages worldwide are
sent each year. Last month, for the first time, the
average number sent declined. The average user sent
978 messages in November, down 18 from the previous
month.

Eyes Text Messaging! |
It may sound like something out of a sci-fi film,
but reading text messages off contact lens in the
eyes could soon be a reality - bringing a whole new
meaning to the term instant messaging.
Scientists have developed a new technology that allows
electronic messages sent from mobile phones to be
directly projected on to contact lens placed in the
recipients eyes.
The spherical curved LCD display, created by Belgium
researchers at Ghent University, handle projected
images using wireless technology.

Underlining the growing trend of cell phone texting
in healthcare, a new survey of pediatric hospitalists
finds that 57% of clinicians send work-related text

per shift. Nearly half of the hospitalists also reported
receiving work-related text messages when not on call.

More physicians are using text messaging to communicate
with each other and their teams in hospitals, a hint
toward a shift from pagers, which have been a regular
accessory to scrubs and white coats for the past 30
years.
The trend is driven by the surge in cell phone use
and advances in technology, not to mention the new
crop of tech-savvy interns and residents, according
to the few studies that have focused on text messaging
among health care professionals.

11/30/2012 Is Text
Messaging on the Decline? |
In countries around the world, text-message traffic
has been shrinking because Internet-powered alternatives
are becoming so widely used. American carriers have
fought off the decline — until now.
For the first time, the American wireless market saw
a decline in the total number of messages sent by
each customer each month, according to a report published
Monday by Chetan Sharma, an independent mobile analyst
who is a consultant for wireless carriers. In the
third quarter of this year, cellphone owners sent
an average of 678 texts a month, down from 696 texts
a month in the previous quarter.
