Improves Breast Cancer Screening Attendance, Study Shows |
The importance of breast cancer screenings, particularly
among women at higher risk, is clear: detecting cancer
early increases the likelihood of recovery. And with
simply forgetting appointments being cited as the
most common reason for missing breast cancer screening
appointments, it seems ensuring that women in at-risk
groups remember their appointments is a priority.

and Hospitality |
But texting hotels can not change the hospitality
industry, right? Or can it? Just imagine…
~ Once your flight lands, you get a text from your
hotel from your rental car service asking what make
and model you would like. After confirming, your car
is ready and waiting when you get down there.
~ As you get in your car, you also get a text from
your hotel asking if you’d like to order anything
from room service. You text back your order.
~ As you park at your hotel, you get a geo-targeted
notification welcoming you and notifying you of attractions/upcoming
events in your area.
~ As you’re eating your meal, you get a text with
from the concierge letting you know you can text them
for anything you might need.

12/09/2015 Seeds,
Soil and SMS: How Mobiles Promote Resilience Among Small-Scale
Farmers in Africa |
Despite producing more than 70% of the world’s
food, most small-scale farmers live on less than $1
a day. Typically, they lack access to finance, traditional
markets and much-needed agricultural products. Not
only that, many also live in remote areas without
Internet access meaning they have no way to access
vital agricultural advice or information, either.
In this issue of Digital Diversity, we look at WeFarm,
a mobile service that enables smallholder farmers
to share agricultural information without the need
for the Internet, and without even having to leave
their farm.

12/07/2015 Where
Mobile Messaging Is Merging With Payments |
One group of innovators is hoping that one of those
ways is via mobile messaging.
You can see why they might think that way. eMarketer
released data this month that shows how fast mobile
messaging has grown on a global basis. They say that
when 2015 is all said and done, mobile messaging apps
will be used by more than 1.4 billion global consumers
in 2015, a 31.6 percent increase from 2014. Seventy-five
percent of them also use a mobile messaging app at
least once a month.

These days, those sales signs planted in front yards
are your gateway to loads of information. If you see
a home you like, text the number on the sign and you
will receive an instant brochure sent to your phone
providing details aplenty, said Felicia Dragone, a
Mullica Hill-based Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway.

12/03/2015 Farmers
Are Sharing Tricks of the Trade Across Continents Via
SMS |
More than half the world still does not have regular
access to the Internet; WeFarm uses SMS to let farmers
exchange information across continents.
The model is simple: A farmer sends a question to
WeFarm. That question is translated and shared with
other farmers—in the same country or beyond. The
goal is to have farmers come up with their own solutions,
and WeFarm helps them achieve that by using a peer-to-peer
platform.

12/01/2015 Sensory
Messaging |
It is a phrase and concept he has patented. And it
took him four years to do it, he said.
Bugg said we use sensory messages all the time –
in a handshake, a hug, a slap on the back. There are
lots of touches that have meaning that we all understand.
Then, the question became, how can we do that remotely?

Texting Impacting Human Trafficking? |
We have seen text messaging used in a host of inventive
ways to make our lives a little easier, but the way
the Polaris Project has enlisted SMS for a bigger
task: helping victims of human trafficking find safety
and get back on their feet. The non-profit, which
works to prevent and fight human trafficking, has
extended their hotline that allows victims of human
trafficking to reach out for help to support text
messages. The benefits of this simple change have
enormous implications for the thousands of victims
of modern day slavery.

Texting Toward Degrees
Texting and schooling: they do not quite seem to work
together. But, schools are showing us more each day,
they do. We often tend to think of texting as a plague
to education, and maybe it has been, distracting leagues
of students studying at home and even students who
find their focus wavering in the classroom. But schools
are turning the tables, embracing the medium in a
number of ways to improve the students' experience
at school. Could texting become a boon, not a bane,
to education?

Food Delivery as Simple as a Text Message? |
Products and services are becoming increasingly easy
to access. Whether it is the latest on-trend clothing
or a flight to Boston, new startups are cutting out
the middle men and using social platforms to connect
with consumers in quick and easy steps. The latest
company to offer such simplicity is Dashio, a new
food delivery service that asks users to simply text
a mobile number the word hello and their order.
Dashio is available from 10am to 10pm, seven days
a week, and once the initial set up has taken place
the aforementioned hello text), users can request
literally anything within the culinary world, be it
a hamburger or a bottle of wine.

11/06/2015 Drinking
Intervention via Text Message |
Evidence continues to emerge that when it comes to
text message-based health interventions, not all text
messages are created equal. That’s the message of
two preliminary research presentations — both text-message-based
behavioral interventions focused on problem drinking
— given at the mHealth Summit in National Harbor,
Maryland this week.
In one study, presented by Dr. Beth Brock of Brown
University, a drinking intervention for community
college students proved feasible when the text messages
were written by the students peers.

10/30/2015 Text Messages:
Impaired Communication |
How often do you find yourself wondering if you may
have simply misunderstood the context or meaning of
a text message?
Most people are pretty adept at transmitting factual
information – names, dates, numbers – to one another.
But how about your feelings, wishes, understanding,
concerns and decisions? That’s when things get messy.
Subjective emotions are full of gray areas, a fogginess
generated by expectations, resentments, assumptions,
jargon and past experience. We bring all of these
elements to our communication with others.
