Faces Lawsuit for Missing Text Messages |
iPhone owners are reportedly finding that they no
longer receive text messages after switching
to an Android or other device. This is due to an old
bug in Apples iMessage service. The problem is caused
by the way Apples iMessage has been developed. It
is a separate messaging system unlike any other SMS
app and Apple uses end-to-end encryption, which means
it is totally secure. When a user signs up for iMessage,
their number is stored in a separate database that
is accessed when another iDevice wants to ping them
with a message. So your contacts device knows the
other person is using iMessage and does not send an
SMS but an iMessage IM. For numbers not in the database,
an SMS is sent, which would entail carrier charges.
However, the problem arises when switching to another
device. When your contacts with iMessage send you
a message, it keeps looking for your Apple device
ID, as it had been registered in the past. So it keeps
trying to send you an iMessage IM instead of an SMS.
The SMS is never delivered and naturally, the iMessage
is not either.
This has led to a new class action lawsuit in Federal
District initiated by Adrienne Moore who switched
from an iPhone to a new Samsung Galaxy S5. Moores
suit sought class action status for all users who
may be in a similar situation, which could end up
running into thousands of potential victims.
It asks for Apple to fix iMessage so that users can
exit the ecosystem without any issues and has asked
for punitive damages to the affected class members.

05/17/2014 SMS Trojans |
SMS trojans are starting to appear in more and more
countries, and for the first time, researchers have
detected an active SMS trojan in the US.
Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakeInst.ef actually targets
users in 66 countries, but has finally landed on US
shores. According to Kaspersky, FakeInst disguises
itself as an application for watching porn videos,
and is capable of sending messages to premium-rate
numbers. Once installed on the phone, the trojan can
intercept incoming messages and then perform various
actions, including steal messages, delete them or
even respond to them.

Uses Text Messages to Help Kids Study |
Teachers have struggled for years to get students
off their cell phones, but that logic is being turned
on its head across sub-Saharan Africa as educators
look to mobile technology to reach a population scrambling
to prepare for economic growth in a region plagued
by poor funding and infrastructure.
Now a growing group of entrepreneurs are capitalizing
on the fact that the vast majority of people in sub-Saharan
Africa don’t own a laptop or computer, but do have
a phone, and know how to use it.

Ends a High Speed Chase |
A woman who thought she had successfully dodged police
in a high-speed car chase admitted defeat after receiving
a text message from the officers that urged her to
hand herself in.
St Kilda police texted the 22-year-old Reservoir woman
after she failed to stop during a car chase on St
Kilda Road just after 1am on Tuesday.
The chase was called off after the woman allegedly
drove through a red light, but the officers were not
willing to give up.
The woman has since been charged with reckless conduct
endangering persons, evading police, driving in a
dangerous manner and at dangerous speed, and other
traffic offences.

05/13/2014 Very Expensive
Text Message |
One careless text message ended up costing a Buffalo,
NY-area man $53,000, the Buffalo News reported earlier
this week. Louis J. Billittier Jr. dumped his fiancee
with a terse text message, breaking off their engagement.
Apparently trying to calm down the situation, he then
sent a fateful text: Plus you get a $50,000 parting
ring. Enough for a down payment on a house. Each
of those 90 characters ended up having a price tag
of roughly $600.
New York state law usually sides with men, giving
them the right to demand back an engagement ring if
a wedding never takes place. But the man’s text
message using the term parting ring seemed
to indicate that his former fiancee was entitled to
keep the 2.97-carat diamond ring.

Bills Paying for Over Texting |
A couple years back, Bills fans signed up to receive
text messages featuring news and offers from the team.
The fine print said they'd receive no more than five
a week. This guy Jerry Wojcik got six! And then, a
few weeks later, seven! So he sued. And now the Bills
have agreed to cough up more than $3 million to settle
the thing.

Sexting |
Honesty, we are constantly told, is the bedrock of
a solid romantic relationship. And yet, people lie
to their romantic partners all the time - to sidestep
arguments, avoid hurt feelings, or cover up problematic
behavior.
Now, a research team has discovered a new medium where
mendacity is the norm: sexting.
In a sample of 155 college students, nearly half of
those who had ever sent a sexually explicit text admitted
that at least some of the messages they sent to their
significant others were lies.
