03/06/2014 Why SMTP
Text Messages Fail |
The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol SMTP is the most
commonly used internet based protocol for third party
SMS delivery. Almost every major carrier in the US
and Canada supports this protocol and, as a result,
this is the most heavily used protocol. The down side
to this protocol is that it is effectively Email,
which means that there are a lot of issues that can
arise from using it.

Helps Students Prepare for College |
A pilot project from the College Foundation of West
Virginia send text messages to students with information
they need to do college-preparation tasks like filling
out financial aid forms or register for the ACT. The
project launched last month as a three-year pilot,
focusing on a select group of high school seniors
across the state.
Higher education officials in West Virginia are reaching
out to high school graduates through a medium they
know well: text messaging.

02/28/2014 The Problem
with Text Messaging |
You do not want to talk to me on the phone. How
do I know? Because I do not want to talk to you on
the phone. Nothing personal, I just can not stand
the thing.
I find it intrusive and somehow presumptuous. It sounds
off insolently whenever it chooses and expects me
to drop whatever I am doing and, well, engage. With
others! When I absolutely must, I take the call, but
I do not do a very good job of concealing my displeasure.
A close family member once offered his opinion that
I exhibit the phone manners of a goat, then promptly
withdrew the charge — out of fairness to goats.

the New Lipstick on the Collar |
Text messages are the new lipstick on the collar,

It has been hailed for its succinctness and blamed
for everything from sore thumbs to the decline of

The first-ever text message was sent December 3, 1992,

Richard Jarvis, who received the message on his husky
Orbitel 901 cell phone. It read simply, Merry Christmas.

Security Concerns |
The Facebook deal for WhatsApp drew attention for
its whopping price tag, but has also brought out fresh
criticism over security for the billions of messages
delivered on the platform.
WhatsApp, which is to be acquired for $19 billion,
says on its website that communication between
your phone and our server is fully encrypted.
The company warns users need to be aware that when
they send messages, the recipient's device may not
be secure. But it says it does not store any chat
history and that messages are wiped off its system
after delivery.
Yet security researchers and others point out that
there may be vulnerabilities in the system used by
some 450 million people globally.

02/03/2014 Would
You Rather... Text Messaging Helps Kids Manage Finances |
I have a distinct memory of convincing a friend to
stand guard outside of a public restroom while I tried
to break into the seemingly impenetrable toilet paper
dispensers to steal a roll for our dorm room. At the
time, $7.00 for a pack of toilet paper seemed like
highway robbery. In other words, literally throwing
money down the toilet.
We were constantly trying to find new ways to make
and save money. My roommate and I both had jobs at
the phonathon on campus where we spent hours in a
windowless basement doing data entry, calling alumni
during their dinner hour and addressing and stamping
hundreds of letters each day. The worst part of it
all was that at the end of the month, my paycheck
would magically disappear.

02/06/2014 Is Text
Messaging Ruining Our Youth |
If you have noticed the apparent omnipresence of
cell phones, as most of us surely have, it likely
will not surprise you that about 86% of the worlds
roughly seven billion people have access to a mobile
phone, or that 80% of cell phone owners use their
devices to send and receive text messages. You may
also be unsurprised to learn that the vast majority
of texts are sent by teenagers under eighteen, and
that the average teen from this group sends over 3,300
texts each month. The story that these numbers tell
is hardly something we do not know: while Generation
X grew up with face-to-face communication and calls
from the landline, the social sphere of today's youth
exists on LCD screens.

Text Messaging Ruining Our Youth?
|
02/05/2014 2014 Year
of Enterprise SMS? |
SMS moves beyond push marketing to enable two-way
communication between Sales and Customers
Text messaging, once used exclusively by teens to
express themselves in just a few characters (LOL,
OMG, BFF…) is growing up fast. In a sign of just
how mainstream texting has become, older adults now
make up the fastest-growing new population of texters,
according to the Pew Internet & Life Project.
Not surprisingly, given this adoption by adults, texting
is now steadily making its way into the workplace.
With the increase in BYOD and BYOA (Bring your own
App) redefining office environments, texting has become
a staple of day-to-day communication between colleagues
and even customers.
But what comes next? Well, predictions are always
fun, but inherently dangerous —for instance, who
is actually driving the Jetsons hovercraft car
of the future that was promised all those years
ago? With that caveat, I am going to offer some predictions
that will be grounded in actual marketplace events
and trends, along with a sneak peak at some proprietary
data that my company, HeyWire Business, will release
in January. The focus of these predictions is the
continued emergence of mobile communications in the
workplace and the evolving expectations of employees
and customers who continue to embrace this technology.

Phone Rules; Contracts for Parents
Owning and using a phone requires a level of responsibility.
With this responsibility, however, comes more opportunities
to make mistakes, and greater accountability for those
mistakes. If your child is receiving their first phone
or first smartphone, show them the following set of
rules to make sure that they know your role in their
use of the phone, understand what appropriate phone
etiquette and conduct is, and will use their phones
responsibly.

Did You Know...
Did you know that you can configure 2-way messaging
with a cellular modem?
PageGate can use a cellular modem to send SMS messages
directly to cell phones and the recipients can reply
to the message. PageGate can then take the replies
and forward them wherever you want them to go.
Did you Know That You Can Tie an RSS Feed into
PageGate?
Using our RSS2SQL PHP script, you can have your RSS
Feed write information to an SQL database. You can
then use linked tables to tie that SQL database to
PageGate's database.
Did you know that PageGate can be integrated with
almost any CAD system?
SunGard's OSSI, Tritechs VisionAir, Interact Public
Safety, RedAlert, ErLogix, does not matter! PageGate
can be integrated with any of them to automate message
delivery.
Did you know that you can use PageGate to receive
information in 10 different formats?
PageGate can listen in for messages from a variety
of sources, everything from direct input from an alarm
panel to CGI parameter from a website. Chances are,
if you need to send message notifications, PageGate
can integrate with whatever you need.
Did you know you can use PageGate to notify your
user base when you update your website with new content?
By generating a text file in a special directory,
you can have it tell PageGate to automatically send
an update notification for anyone in your user base.

Building a Successful Community
Building an online community demands time and sustained
effort. While numbers are not everything when it comes
to communities, there are several tricks that can
increase the number of subscribers to your forum.
However, it is important to note that a large number
of members does not determine the success of a community;
a smaller number of active and interested members
can often result in a very successful online community.

Develop Content Worth Linking To
All webmasters have heard the adage, content is
king. However, the struggle to discern what types
of content to develop is one that webmasters have
yet to conquer. If you are familiar with this dilemma,
you should know that Googles latest algorithm changes
cause Google to assess how visitors interact with
a website. This data from a visitors experience is
now used in organic search ranking. Therefore, you
must create content that visitors will not only click
on, but that they will spend time reading and even
return to. For content development success, develop
content not only worth linking to, but worth spending
time on! http://www.small-business-software.net/developing-content-worth-linking-to.htm

The women in the intervention group received five

Tracks Sports Injuries |
Text messaging is a quick and effective way to get
recreational athletes to report injuries, according
to a new Australian study.
Playing recreational sports is a good way to get more
exercise, researchers said. But little is known about
injuries at that level.
What's more, injury prevention strategies that work
at the elite level are not necessarily relevant to
recreational leagues - which have different types
of players, different training loads and a different
style of play, according to the studys lead author.
They recruited 139 football players from four Australian
community clubs at the beginning of the 2012 season.
The researchers sent texts to players a day or two
after each weekly match, asking if the player had
suffered any new injuries. If he responded yes, the
researchers called him and recorded the details of
the injury.
During the 18-week season, the researchers sent out
2,516 text messages. A total of 171 injuries were
reported by 92 football players.

01/26/2014 Kiev Protest
Text Message |
As my colleague Andrew Kramer reported, protesters
and journalists standing in the vicinity of fighting
between the riot police and demonstrators in Kiev
on Tuesday received an ominous text message on their
phones: Dear subscriber, you are registered as
a participant in a mass disturbance.
While it was unsigned, and local phone companies denied
sending it, the text message — which echoed language
in a new law making it a crime to participate in protests
deemed violent — was widely read as a warning from
the government.
Although it is unclear exactly what impact the message
had on the stalwart protesters standing in the cold,
the we-are-watching-you subtext provoked shivers far
beyond Ukraine as news of it spread online.
