05/31/2016 Can Texting Double Your Odds of Kicking Smoking for Good?

Many smokers know all too well how difficult smoking can be to give up; a 2010 CDC survey showed that almost 7 out of 10 smokers wanted to kick the habit completely, yet many struggle to do so. And most smokers know how beneficial succeeding would be for their health-- after all, tobacco use is the greatest preventable cause of disease and death in the United States to this day, with more than 480,000 Americans dying from smoking or secondhand smoke each year. So, in the face of such difficulty but such importance, how does one quit for good?

Texting presents a tentative answer.

05/28/2016 Can SMS Bolster Skin Cancer Prevention?

Summer is in full swing, and for many of us, months of bright and sunny weather lie ahead. But before you pack the car and head to the beach, are you making sure you are protecting yourself from sun damage? If you find yourself forgetting the sunscreen or the hat a little too often, a new study from Australia may have a solution for you-- and that solution takes the form of texting.

Sun protection is of huge importance. We are hardly used to looking at a sunburn as a huge deal, but even one severe sunburn in one's childhood, or only five sunburns throughout one's life, can double one's risk of skin cancer, specifically melanoma. For our health and safety, it is critical to practice good sun protection habits.

This is far from the case; in fact, GPS technology is being combined with text messaging to track both wildlife and livestock, a useful tool to keep an eye on both the farm animals we depend on and the increasing number of endangered or threatened species.

One device conservationalists are using to keep tabs on wildlife is cellular GPS collars.

05/22/2016 How SMS is Transforming Lives in Africa

The recent pace of economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa has undeniably been of enormous benefit to the continent. Countries such as Angola, Ghana, Mozambique, and Nigeria have profited from high levels of foreign investment and commodity exports, enabling them to invest in much-needed infrastructure. While this has certainly led to societal transformations, it has also exacerbated the gap between new technologies and old, often defective systems. Much of sub-Saharan Africa continues to be plagued by poor access to electricity, sporadic Internet coverage, and weak governance—none of which is promising for the development of the latest technologies. These obstacles, while challenging, have nevertheless provided fertile ground for innovations using an already widespread technology: the mobile phone.

Text messaging is in large part so impactful in realty because it is an ideal line of contact between buyers and sellers. Buyers increasingly feel comfortable with SMS, if not prefer it, as a mode of contact. Additionally, text messaging offers intrinsic benefits. It is much less invasive and time-consuming than a phone call, and it spares buyers the effort of writing down information received in a call, as a text message is its own record of information that can be revisited. Texting can even trump email, with more and more people preferring the convenience and casual nature of SMS.
