04/29/2016 New Research Suggests Text Messages Improve Election Day Turnout in the Developing World, With Conditions

The spread of cell phones coupled with the ease and efficiency of text messaging helps people save, spend, and invest their money more wisely. Text messages and mobile apps improve health outcomes by teaching people about nutrition and reminding patients to take their medication. They also further education by helping students learn more effectively through virtual tutoring.

We now have evidence that text messages improve civic engagement in emerging countries by encouraging people to vote. A recent study I conducted in Kenya with Benjamin Marx, an economist at MIT, and Vincent Pons, of Harvard Business School, found that get-out-the-vote text messages increased Election Day turnout by as much as 2 percentage points.

The total volume of SMS messages sent daily is around 20 billion; at the start of last year WhatsApp, the messaging app owned by Facebook, said it had surpassed that with its users sending over 30 billion messages a day. 04/11/2016 Marijuana Study to Utilize Text Messaging

The National Institute of Health has announced that it will be supporting a study at UNC about how marijuana relates to academic motivation and performance. Over the next three years, Kristina Phillips and Michael Phillips, professors of psychology, and Trent Lalonde, a professor of applied statistics and research methods, will study 150 UNC students who use marijuana.

According to Kristina Phillips, the application process for the study was extensive. The main component of the application was writing a proposal based on scientific research. This included reviewing past research on the topic, what gaps there may be in the current literature and considerations about how the study would attend to those gaps. They also had to discuss data that they had already collected on the topic.

The Phillips and Lalonde have hypothesized that the more cravings students have for marijuana, the more they will use it—impacting their focus and academic work. Kristina Phillips explained that there has been almost no prior research on the consequences of heavy marijuana use in relation to academics, even though a number of studies on adolescents have shown there to be an inverse relationship between the two.

How Texting Can Keep You Safe in Severe Weather
Most of us can recall a time when we wished we'd planned a little better during a big storm. After all, bad weather is an unavoidable fact of life, and all we can do when severe weather is expected is plan accordingly to stay warm, dry, and safe. Believe it or not, text messaging can help you do that: SMS weather alerts are perhaps the most powerful and effective tool to stay in the know, and therefore to plan right, for severe weather.

Tracking Animals with SMS
Oftentimes, we think of the conservation of the old as incongruous with the use of newer technology like mobile devices. This is far from the case; in fact, GPS technology is being combined with text messaging to track both wildlife and livestock, a useful tool to keep an eye on both the farm animals we depend on and the increasing number of endangered or threatened species.
