10/30/2015 Text Messages:
Impaired Communication |
How often do you find yourself wondering if you may
have simply misunderstood the context or meaning of
a text message?
Most people are pretty adept at transmitting factual
information – names, dates, numbers – to one another.
But how about your feelings, wishes, understanding,
concerns and decisions? That’s when things get messy.
Subjective emotions are full of gray areas, a fogginess
generated by expectations, resentments, assumptions,
jargon and past experience. We bring all of these
elements to our communication with others.

10/28/2015 How Text
Messaging Across The World Saved My Military Marriage |
My husband and I text more than we have ever
spoken. To date, we have spent more time apart than
together.
When I think about talking to him, the first thing
I do is reach for my phone. It is not to call him,
but to send him a text.
Our relationship has been a little unconventional.
We were together a year before he decided to join
the military. Originally, we wrote letters when he
was in basic training, then it progressed to text
messages.

Statistics That Prove Businesses Need to Take SMS Seriously |
Texting has been around for over 20 years, but it
is only now just hitting its stride when it comes
to business. Formerly just a way to send silly photos
and emoticons (and to some extent, it still is), text
messaging is now being viewed as a powerful way for
businesses to connect with their customers.

This group of scientists has found that simple, small

Governments around the world are increasingly getting
interested in how insights from psychology can make
policy more effective. As an NPR Ed intern last year,
I wrote about a proposal to use text messages to nudge

10/18/2015 30 Percent
of Teens End Relationships via Text Message |
Tinder and other dating apps like to focus on how
digital romances begin. But a study by Pew Research
Center shows that more teen daters are using their
phones to end relationships than scout for new romantic
possibilities.
Almost 30% of teenagers have broken up or been broken
up with over text message.

Wounds: Is SMS the Future of Sports Medicine |
Sports are an enormously popular pastime; recreational
sports constitute a huge proportion of participation
in sports. And yet, likely due to the lack of attention
placed on sports at the recreational level, injuries
in community level sports garner little attention.
More importantly, injuries from recreational sports
often go unreported, creating a large gap in the store
of information available on sports-related injuries.
This may not seem like a significant issue, but it
represents a large problem for the field of sports
medicine research. Researchers lack information on
a large proportion of participants in sports, skewing
the tendencies of their data towards more elite levels
of sports participation, which may produce different
figures.

to Health |
exting patients regular reminders to do things like
eat right, exercise more and smoke less may help them
make lifestyle changes linked to a lower risk of heart
attacks and strokes, an Australian study suggests.
Researchers sent four texts a week to about 350 people
with heart disease to supplement their regular care
with reminders designed to encourage healthier habits.
Another group of about 350 patients stuck with their
usual care routines but did not receive texts.

College More Affordable, One Text At A Time |
Texting Your Way To College
The first example dealt with the problem of high schoolers
who have been accepted to college, but don't show
up in the fall Ȓ a well-documented phenomenon known
as summer melt.
To tackle this, the researchers placed 4,882 students
into different groups. One group of students received
personalized text messages with friendly reminders
and simple instructions to finish tasks, like filling
out necessary forms, over the summer. The control
group got none.
When the researchers followed up with the participants
in the fall, they found that college enrollment among
low-income students in the text-message group had
jumped by 8.6 percent compared with the control group.

10/07/2015 History
of Messaging |
Text messaging has been around since 1985, but the
history of messaging is much more complex. For centuries,
the fastest way to communicate was through smoke signals,
which could relay messages for hundreds of miles.
Only until the late 1800s did the Pony Express make
delivery of messages by horse economical. With the
development of the telegraph, messaging became digital
and technology improved from there.

scientific evaluation of these interventions, according

dollars being spent each year by Americans on weight
loss-related products and services, there simply has
to be a better way. And, studies suggest, there is.
