Saves Newborns |
Representatives of the South-Korean cooperation agency
Koica and the UN children's fund Unicef have visited
Bugesera to assess how health services providers and
community health workers use Rapid SMS technology
to assist pregnant women and newborns. Both organizations
have supported the establishment of the system.
According to Unicef deputy representative Oliver Petrovic,
beneficiaries of rapid SMS include pregnant mothers,
newborns and children under the age of two, while
users are among others community health workers, providers
at health centers, district hospital local administrators,
as well as private sector and policy makers at central
and district level .
He said that he was impressed by the work being implemented
on the ground, where the Rapid SMS system is reducing
maternal deaths and improving the lives of mothers.

Implications of Text Messaging |
When we think of texting, we tend to envision a purely
social medium: first to come to mind is often the
image of teenagers firing off messages bereft with
acronyms. While texting is an enormously popular social
medium and has played a key role in shaping communication,
it plays other significant roles in our lives. In
fact, texting may have a variety of surprising implications
for the world of health and medicine.

03/18/2015 Does Punctuation
in Text Messages Matter? |
In 1895, the American writer Mark Twain published
an essay in which he warned writers about the overuse
of exclamation points. He believed it made them look
as if they were laughing at their own jokes.
What do you think Twain would think about the frequency
with which people use exclamation points today?

Fortunately, you can get your iOS or Android-powered
mobile to erase older messages automatically. Here
are the settings to use if you can live without your
text history.
Before you get started you might want to review some
of the most important conversations in your messaging
app to make sure there is nothing you want to keep
hold of. Any declarations of true love? Or, more likely,
important addresses that you have not written down
yet? If you are looking for something that can back
up your messages somewhere else, there are a few options
to pick from.

for showing your emotions, you could be at risk of
being charged hundreds for sending emoticons through
text messages. In Britannia, a woman managed to run
up a bill of more than £1,000 by using emoticons
which she believed were free to send.

03/11/2015 Is Text
Messaging Changing your Brain? |
The notion that text messaging can change the brain
seems like science fiction, something that is said
to scare teenagers away from technology. However,
The Huffington Post reports that text messaging may
indeed alter the brain.
A study indicates that text messaging on a touch screen
could change the sensory-processing area of the brain.
Arko Ghosh, neuroscientist at University of Zurich
said that cell phones, smartphones in particular,
offer a chance to see how daily life shapes the brain.
The brain receives signals from the body. It turns
out that when a part of the body is used often, such
as fingers from text messaging, it can adapt and become
more sensitive.
The goal of the study was to determine if frequent
text messaging can cause changes in the somatosensory
cortex.

you, there is a connection test you'll need to run
that requires the Telnet Client to be enabled in Windows.

02/11/2015 How Your
Phone Can Make Driving Safer |
As much as we love our phones, their widespread use
has a number of negative consequences, and the fact
that almost one in four car collisions involve cell
phones is a particularly grave one. However, many
innovators have responded to this danger, developing
technologies that aim to reduce the role of cell phones
in distracted driving. These devices and applications
serve to build understanding of the perils of distracted
driving as well as to fight drivers' urges to use
their phones on the road.

Using Texting for Pilot Program |
Canadian financial institutions have made significant
advancements towards mobile banking, such as cheque
deposits, stock trading, viewing bank balances, and
transferring funds.
TD Bank, the second largest bank in Canada, has announced
a new way for customers, or future customers, to seek
quick feedback. Rather than calling into the call
centre, TD Bank has launched the ability to connect
via text message with TDHELP. This was
originally a pilot project that kicked off last Fall
and allows to ask questions about TD Banks services.

Declines in U.S. for First Time |
In countries around the world, text-message traffic
has been shrinking because Internet-powered alternatives
are becoming so widely used. American carriers have
fought off the decline — until now.
For the first time, the American wireless market saw
a decline in the total number of messages sent by
each customer each month, according to a report published
Monday by Chetan Sharma, an independent mobile analyst
who is a consultant for wireless carriers. In the
third quarter of this year, cellphone owners sent
an average of 678 texts a month, down from 696 texts
a month in the previous quarter.
