Cell Phone Without Wires
Even physicists forget to recharge their cell
phones sometimes. After waking up to the beeps of
his battery-dead phone at 3 a.m., Marin Soljacic,
an assistant professor of physics at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, decided to cut the cord.
He and two colleagues have developed a concept that
could let you charge your electronics as easily as
you get a suntan: without wires.

|12/19/2006 Spotty Cell
While most U.S. cities are blanketed with advanced
cell phone service at least four times over, huge
patches of rural America still don't have cell phone
coverage. What's more, the problem could get worse
before it gets better when rules requiring carriers
to offer older, analog service expire early in 2008.
|12/14/2006 Mobile Weather
A greater percentage of cell phone Internet users
visit popular weather and sports Web sites compared
with people who go online via computer, according
to survey findings by MobileWeb Metrix.
Though mobile Web usage still represents a tiny
fraction of all online activity, the findings may
suggest certain types of information and services
are seen as more popular or critical on wireless devices.

|12/12/2006 Cellular Ad
Cellphones are among the most popular tech toys
for holiday gifts, with carriers making about 30%
of sales in the fourth quarter.
"Cellphones are electronic devices with so many
capabilities that make them great gifts - and you
pay for them all year long," says Mike Gatti, executive
director of the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association
That's why the fourth quarter is the heaviest for
ad spending by Cingular, the biggest U.S. wireless
carrier at about 59 million customers.
|12/11/2006 Study Says
Cell Phones Do Not Cause Cancer
A study released Tuesday, involving some 400,000
Danish cell phone users, appears to debunk the notion
that cell phone use increases the risk of cancer.
Some of the subjects were tracked for more than
20 years, as the study set out to marry medical data
from 1982 to the present day. Among users, 14,249
cancer cases were reported, according to the survey,
a spread that doesn't offer a statistically significant
deviation from what would normally be expected.

Adult content on mobile devices will be worth
$3.3 billion by 2011, up from $1.4 billion this year,
according to industry analysts Juniper Research.
Europe is the biggest spender on porn, due to both
its appetite for smut and the relatively high-priced
nature of adult content. The Asia-Pacific region follows
in second place.
