Tone-Only Pagers
The simplest type of pager, tone-only devices emit an audible beep or vibration to alert the wearer. No message is displayed — the recipient simply knows they've been paged and must call a predetermined number. Despite their simplicity, tone-only pagers remain in use in hospitals and other settings where a simple alert is sufficient.
Numeric Pagers
Numeric pagers display a phone number or numeric code on a small screen. The sender dials a number, enters the callback number, and the pager displays it. Numeric pagers were extremely popular in the 1980s and 1990s before alphanumeric pagers became affordable.
Alphanumeric Pagers
Alphanumeric pagers can display text messages, allowing senders to communicate detailed information rather than just a callback number. These pagers are widely used in healthcare, public safety, and industrial applications where message content matters.
Two-Way Pagers
Two-way pagers allow recipients to respond to messages, enabling actual two-way communication. These devices were popular in the late 1990s before smartphones made them largely redundant for consumer use. They continue to serve niche professional applications.
