How to use Cellular Hardware with NotePager Pro Transcript for Video:
Welcome to the video tutorial on how to configure NotePager Pro to send SMS using cellular hardware.

To send SMS with cellular hardware, you’ll first need a cellular capable device like Multitech’s MTC-H5 series of cellular modem. Once you have the modem connected to the computer and its driver is installed, Windows will assign it a COM port. To determine the COM port of your modem, you’ll want to go in to the Control Panel in Windows, then open ‘Phone and Modem’. Once there, go under the Modems tab and you’ll see a list of all available modems and their related COM ports.

Next, open NotePager Pro and go to the Tools – Settings – Connection section.

Specify the cellular modem’s COM port in the ‘Modem Port’ field, then click Apply.

Now go to Carriers – Add.

Give the carrier a name, something straightforward like SMS or CellModem.

Set the Protocol to: GSMAT

Click Advanced.

Leave the Baud, Parity, Data Bits and Stop Bits at their default value (115200, none, 8, 1).

You can leave the ‘Init String’ field blank but if you use the init string AT+CSQ, the program will check the signal quality of the cellmodem before sending an SMS. That way you have a record of the cell signal strength on the device when a message was delivered; this can make tracking down missing or failed messages a little easier.

The ‘Max Chars’ field is half of a two-part equation in NotePager Pro. The carrier ‘Max Chars’ field determines the maximum number of characters a single message may contain. The recipient ‘Max Chars’ field determines the maximum number of characters you want to send to that person.

So, if the recipient ‘Max Chars’ value is higher than the carrier ‘Max Chars’ value, the program will break up long messages in to multiple messages based on the carrier’s value.

For example, since we’re sending SMS, that means we want the carrier ‘Max Chars’ value to be 160 since an SMS may only contain 160 characters. However, let’s say that we set the recipient’s ‘Max Chars’ value to 500. Let’s then also say that we sent a 300 character message to that recipient. NotePager Pro would break that up in to one 160 character message and one 140 character message.

For more information about the ‘Priority’ value, have a look at the ‘Prioritizing Your Messages’ video tutorial.

When finished, click back, and then click Apply.

Now all that remains is adding a recipient that uses the new carrier. To do that, go to Recipients – Add.

Give the recipient a name.

Select your GSMAT carrier from the list.

In the ID/PIN, enter the 10 digit cell phone number.

Click Advanced. Set the ‘Max Chars’ value to the number of characters you want to send to this person. Click back, then click Apply. Click OK and your recipient is now available to message.
