Each major mobile carrier operates an email-to-SMS gateway — an email address format that converts incoming emails into SMS messages delivered to the carrier's subscribers. The format is typically [10-digit phone number]@[carrier gateway domain]. For example:

When an email is sent to one of these addresses, the carrier's gateway strips the email headers, converts the subject and body to a text message, and delivers it to the recipient's phone as a standard SMS.

Limitations of Email-to-SMS Gateways

Delivery delays: Email-to-SMS goes through email infrastructure before reaching the carrier — introducing potential delays that make it unsuitable for time-critical alerts. Direct carrier connections (SNPP, WCTP) or SMS APIs deliver faster.

Carrier knowledge required: The sender must know the recipient's carrier to use the correct gateway address. For consumer contacts, this information may not be readily available.

Message length: Email bodies are truncated at 160 characters. Long emails arrive as partial or garbled text messages.
