What Is Alphanumeric Paging?

Alphanumeric paging is a paging mode that allows text messages — containing both letters (alpha) and numbers (numeric) — to be displayed on a pager. In contrast, early numeric pagers could only display phone numbers or numeric codes that the recipient had to interpret (e.g., "911" meant "call immediately," "143" meant "I love you").

With alphanumeric paging, a dispatcher or computer system can send a complete plain-language message such as "Patient in Room 214 needs medication — Dr. Chen" and the full text appears on the pager's display.

How Alphanumeric Paging Works

Alphanumeric messages are transmitted over dedicated paging network frequencies using protocols such as FLEX, POCSAG, or ERMES. Messages are composed at a paging terminal, computer, or software system and transmitted through paging transmitters to pagers within the coverage area. The pager receives the signal, decodes the message, and displays the text on the pager's LCD screen.
