What Does HIPAA Stand For?

HIPAA is an acronym that stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. HIPAA's primary purpose was to protect an individual's right to privacy and to protect their personal and health information from anyone other than those managing their health care. HIPAA is a federal law that required the creation of national standards to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient's consent or knowledge.
