WCTP issuses with USA Mobility (Formally Arch)

I am having intermittent issues sending wctp messages to USA Mobility. What is happening is that PageGate is submitting the message, appears to wait 17 seconds, and doesn't get a response from USA Mobility's server so PageGate declares it failed but in fact the message does go out. PageGate will attempt again resulting in the user receiving duplicate pages.

Personally I think the issue is with the WCTP server taking too long but a USA Mobility tech indicated we must set the WCTP timeout as 30 seconds. I don't see a WCTP timeout in the PageGate admin utility. Is this in a registry key or a config file somewhere? Is anyone else having this issue with USA Mobility?

By the way I am running PageGate 4.0.0.96 dated 12/12/2005.

Hmm... the first thing I'd check would be any firewalls or routers on your computer or network, make sure they aren't filtering or blocking any packets.

I don't think that's the case but it's worth looking into, just in case.

I will say, however, that I have seen this happen with the Arch WCTP host for three or four clients in the last day or two.

The best answer I've found, so far, is to switch to the "Metrocall" (Also known as Arch, USA Mobility, etc) SNPP host.

Change the protocol on your carrier to SNPP and use the host snpp.metrocall.com - you shouldn't have any trouble with that.

As for the timeout, that's hard coded into the program - it isn't really a variable that can be changed.

The carrier has been having "issues" with their platform over the last couple weeks. Everything will seem fine and then a HUGE delay seems apparent. My suspicion is that it is related to some of the recent top tier internet providers outages causing significant packet traffic rerouting
