We are trying to SMS via Verizon (CDMA). We are using a verizon cell modem card in a laptop (Pantech PC Card UDP). The modem is on COM 4. The PANTECH Packet Service Diagnostic Serial Port (UDP) is assigned Com 5. We are trying to SMS to a verizon phone.
The closest we have gotten is to set Dialer 1 to Com 5 direct connect, and pre-establish a dialup connection (via the Pantech modem). Below is what is in the dialer log (repeated over and over):
10/25/2007 14:00:10 Sent:AT<CR>
10/25/2007 14:00:11 Received:<CR><LF>OK<CR><LF>
10/25/2007 14:00:11 Modem reset
10/25/2007 14:00:11 Attempting to send dialer init string
10/25/2007 14:00:12 Sent:AT&FQ0V1X4&D2+MS=V22,0<CR>
10/25/2007 14:00:12 Received:<CR><LF>OK<CR><LF>
10/25/2007 14:00:13 Dialer init string sent
10/25/2007 14:00:13 Attempting to send carrier init string
10/25/2007 14:00:13 Sent:AT&FQ0V1X4&D2+MS=V22,0<CR>
10/25/2007 14:00:13 Received:<CR><LF>OK<CR><LF>
10/25/2007 14:00:14 Carrier init string sent
10/25/2007 14:00:14 Sent:AT+CMGF=1<CR>
10/25/2007 14:00:19 Received:<CR><LF>ERROR<CR><LF>
10/25/2007 14:00:19 Unable to enter text delivery mode
10/25/2007 14:00:19 Attempting to reset modem

Ant suggestions on how to accomplish this. We are trying to test this prior to spending the money for your program and the MultiTech modem.
Thanks!

BRAD

It sounds like you want to configure a GSM modem or device on the system. I know that you mentioned you wanted to try to send to Verizon via CDMA but the program doesn't actually support the CDMA command set. It does, however, support the GSM command set.

Then again, it also sounds like you might want to configure the program to use a modem to pick up a phone line and dial directly into the carrier's TAP terminal, so I was wondering if I could get you to clarify a little?

Happy to clarify (as much as I can). What we are trying to do is send SMS messages via a cellular device. We are looking at your program and a MultiTech modem. We are trying to verify we can do what we need by using your program and a cellphone (connected via a USB cable) as the connection to the cell world. We are in a Verizon, Sprint/Nextel (or what ever they are called this week) and CellOne (soon to be AT&T also) area. They are the primary carriers, and are cdma and not gsm. None of their local stores sell a phone that has a SIM in it (so they claim). With Verizon (who we have our cellphones from), for a device to 'connect' to the internet world, it 'dials' #777 (over the cellphone). This then establishes a connection for WWW usage. We may be way off in how we are configuring our equipment. We are trying to use the SMS ring to send message to carriers that are VERY unreliable with SMTP and do not have TAP access.
Any suggestions on how to do what we are trying to do? If we did get a GSM device, we are not sure how well it would be supported (signal wise and for how long). Are we WAY off in our thinking?
Thanks for your help!
BRAD

Have you tried MultiTech's support forum? The question to ask is: "What init string should I use to address the modem's AT command set?". PageGate calls the protocol GSM since the AT Command set is included in the GSM protocol. I'll have to dig through my files, but I know that several of the MultiTech CDMA modems will accomplish what yoi're looking for. PageGate "thinks" it is talking to a GSM device and the Multi Tech modem is only looking for info over the serial/usb cable
