|
|
Hello Tech Support,
I am hoping you can help me with a problem I am having where PageGate refuses to send messages to a paging service we have used and continue to use successfully. What has changed is that the old modem died and we have replaced it with a new NetComm CD2004 - Mega-i-Modem. Below you will find a typical excerpt from the PageGate logs.
Things I have tried thus far
• These init strings defined on the Carrier:
AT&F%C0&U1
AT&F%C0&U0*I5
at+ms=v34,0
• No init strings defined on Dialer 1 and on the Carrier
• The "auto" value for the init string defined on Dialer 1 and Carrier
• Permutations of the above ad infinitum all of which made no difference
• Having the modem disabled and enabled in Windows Server 2003
• Various values for Baud, Parity, Data and Stop values (8, N, 1, 1, etc)
• The modem responds to the Windows diagnostics
• Verified that the modem is set to COM1 and Dialer 1 is set to Serial 1
• This server has used PageGate to send pages perfectly before but ever since the new modem, it now does this... (see the below log)

Any suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Is the 'Routing and Remote Access' service running on your server? Any new modem that is installed will be automatically enabled in that service, and therefore be unavailable to PageGate.
To test the modem's availability, go to 'Start' -> 'All Programs' -> 'Communications' -> 'Hyperterminal'. When Hyperterminal is run, it will as for a name for the connection. Just put anything there (i.e. 'test'). On the next screen, in the 'Connect Using' box, don't choose the modem from the list, but choose 'Com1' instead. Next set the communications settings to 1200 baud, 7 data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control.
You should get a blank terminal window, and every type your type: AT <enter>, you should get an 'OK' back. If that doesn't happen, then there is still something wrong with the Windows/Modems setup (i.e. something is using it).

Firstly, thanks for responding to my question. I checked RRAS and found that it is not running as evidenced here...

PageGate Dialer1 Started Automatic
PageGate GetAscii Started Automatic
PageGate Scheduler Started Automatic
Routing and Remote Access Disabled
Then I ran HyperTerminal using COM1, 1200, 7, E, 1 and None with the following results:

I probably should have told you initially that we have two (2) Carriers defined on this server and the other one works perfectly with the new modem. The difference between the two Carriers (apart from the service related items) is the telephone number they dial.
Then I created a new Carrier and configured the service related items but left all the comms items to their default values. This was the result:

Those question marks in the log are typically indicative of a parity mismatch. In your carrier settings if the parity is even, change it to none, or vice versa.

Shall give that a try in a moment.
Thank you.

This is the result of using None as the Parity value in the Carrier properties (it was set to Even). The values I have used in this test are as follows: 1200, None, 7, 1, no init string (i.e., NOT auto).

You mentioned that you have 2 carriers set up and one of them works fine. That leads me to believe thast your issue is not your modem. Haveyou verified that the telephone number for the carrier that is NOT working is actually a TAP modem pool?_________________ Aaron D. Osgood

Well, one of the bright sparks in the company here found a solution to our problem and it was to add the following init string in to the properties of the modem in Windows Device Manager. Note that I had already tried this init string but had placed it in the properties of the problematic Carrier profile.
&F%C0&U1
Thanks to Ozcom and Tech Support for responding to my request for assistance.
