After installing Pagegate on a Windows Server 2003 SP1 box, I noticed that I could not get the GetMail feature working. The service PGMailServer.exe would continuously try to start, then crash, leaving a stream of event log errors in it's wake.
In our case the culprit was Microsoft's Data Execution Prevention feature. Once that was turned off and the system was rebooted, Pagegate behaved normally and the service started without issue.
DEP can be a good way to prevent viruses from exploiting your machine, so you'd need to evaluate your environment if you normally have DEP running. In our case it was safe to turn off and put an end to two days of headaches trying to figure out what was going on. Just an FYI to anyone else experiencing the same problem.
Also, DEP normally notifies you when it blocks a program from running. For whatever reason, it didn't do that for me.
