I am trying to get notepager 32 to work on a new Dell computer. When it tries to send a message the modem will connect to the carrier and logs on to the carrier but it does not detect TAP protocol. It works good on my old computer and I have the configuration set exactly the same except the initilization string is set to auto. Please help!!

We have not had any luck with getting Intel 537 Winmodems to handle the low baud rates and TAP.

There are some modems (mostly the really inexpensive ones) that simply do not work with the older style modems that the wireless carriers tend to use.

It isn't a software problem, it isn't a hardware problem (at least individually), the two modems simply won't work reliably together (or work at all). Even in this day and age of high technology, we still on occasionally suffer incompatibility problems between hardware devices.

The only solution in situations like this are to replace one of the
modem, with another brand or model. Because the carrier isn't likely to change what is on their end, your only option is to change the modem on your end.

When looking for a good modem to work with paging software, steer clear of Winmodems - the really inexpensive ones packaged with many systems today. A good external, or internal modem will cost between $50 and $100. Anything less than that is most likely a Winmodem which is really just a cost cutting way to make modems.

Modem recommendations (in order of preference)

1. US Robotics Sportster External Modem (RS232)
2. Any External Modem (RS232)
3. US Robotics Sportster Internal Modem
4. Any internal Modem (not winmodem)

Thanks for the bad news. It was what I was expecting, but didn't want to admit it. I appreciate the support.
