I am using Notepage Pro and am unable to connect to my carrier. I have tried all of the init strings and no luck. After the carrier answers I can not get my computer to talk with the carrier. Help??

What is the make and model of your modem?

What init string did the program choose for your modem (found under carrier settings)?

What settings are you using for the baud, parity, etc. (found under the carrier settings)?

What phone number do you have the carrier set to dial?

Do you hear the high-piched modem sound(s) after your modem dials?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with an internal modem.

I tried ALL of the init strings listed in the software, tried 300,1200,2400 baud.

It dials the number, and I get the high pitched sound everytime. Depending on what init string I use, depends on what happens then. Some strings cause XP to crash, other cause all kinds of squealing and noise to be made but bottom line is no connect to the carrier.

Help?

Newer Dell computers typically come with Conexant V.92 modems standard. These are possibly the worst modems made for connecting to older/slower modems. The first step you should try is to get an updated driver for your modem from Dell. At the very least this should fix the probem in the modem driver that causes your computer to reboot when you access the modem. I have also seen new drivers from Dell and Conexant fix the problem of the modem connecting to older/slower modems, like the ones the paging carriers use.

If Dell can't help you, then download an updated driver from Conexant's website:
http://www.conexant.com

This is the init string you should be using:
for 300 baud
AT&FQ0V1X4&D2N0+MS=B103,0
for 1200 baud
AT&FQ0V1X4&D2N0+MS=V22,0

Your last resort is to buy a 'real' modem instead of a Winmodem. US Robotics Sportster external modems seem to work best with most carriers, an are easy to install because they are external.

Your best bet is to set the init string setting to (auto). In most cases the program will find the proper init string for you. You should start with 1200 for your baud rate, even parity, and 7 data bits, for your communication settings on the carrier screen.

In NotePager go to the 'Carriers' menu. Choose 'Edit'. If you are using NotePager Pro, select the carrier you want to change and hit 'Edit'. In NotePager 32 the screen will already be displayed.

I have tried everything that you have suggested ... put init string setting to auto ... set data bits and parity to the prescribed settings and used every baud rate available ... still the program won't work ... can't talk to the carrier . my modem is a smart link 56k voice modem . please advise me what i can do with this . i installed this program in a computer with a conexant v.92 modem and had no trouble installing and using it . just for fyi !!!

Unfortunately, there are some modems that simply will not connect properly at low baud rates. These are mostly WinModems instead of 'real' modems.

Do you have the option of trying a different modem on this computer? If you have any old external modems hanging around, they usually work well, and are easy to test because you just have to plug them into the serial port on the computer.
