This forum contains many reports of users having difficulty with the SMS center connection having a successful outcome after being directed to correct setup strings, and so forth.

Please tell me if you know, for a fact, that some of these successful outcomes included NotePager users having fixed network (as opposed to mobile or cellular) SMS.

If you can answer affirmatively, I will proceed and hopefully have the same favorable outcome. On the other hand, if all the successes so far are with mobile-cellular SMS, please let me know that, as well. Thanks!

P.S.: The Subject of this thread has been changed for accuracy: I now believe I have not been getting as far as the handshake itself, before the server drops the connection.

I have not personally worked with anyone that is using our software with fixed network SMS. So, I cannot say for certain that it will work with the correct settings. It sounds like the first milestone is going to be getting your modem to handshake with theirs. You may want to try using Hyperterminal during this period of experimentation because it is easier to quickly try many different settings.

Once you have your modem handshaking properly with theirs (using hyperterminal), then try the same settings in NotePager Pro.

Thanks for letting me know that all successful use of NotePager has as far as you know been only with mobile/cellular SMS. That will save me lots of time, as I have already done all the experimenting I know how to do, with HyperTerminal.

I have come across some information indicating that contrary to posts in the previous tread I may in fact have been using the correct number in spite of not getting a traditional modem synchronization tone. You will recall in the prior tread I reported hearing "two chirps separated by a second or two of silence." This was taken by technical support as an indication that I was using an incorrect number for the SMSC.

If you look at the October 13 post in this forum http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=561830 you will find that someone with far more technical expertise that I is saying that with fixed-network SMSC's one indeed may expect to hear, not two-three seconds of modem tones, but "2 tones separated by a couple of seconds."

This writer further identifies this as a "TAS (Terminal Equipment Alerting Signal)," but even he can't figure out what to do with it! The thread stops there without anyone reporting a successful conclusion. From the preceding, I get the impression it's going to take a lot more than my personal ability with HyperTerminal to make a connection. Thank you for your confidence in advising what I may do to trouble-shoot this by myself, but I am only an advanced user, not a programmer.

I will continue to check on the internet to see if anyone has discovered a software solution for fixed-network SMS. If you are able, let me know when there is sufficient demand for your programmers to get NotePager working with this protocol. I will leave the reply-notification box checked.

In the meantime, if what I found is correct, you may want to tell potential users that while NotePager is a great program, it is only for those who have mobile/cellular SMS. Good luck to your programmers in working out a solution!
