Just as an update to the forum thread, it turns out that OzCom's last post is correct. The device doesn't support direct COM ports or the GSM-AT command set.

Hi again,
I called Verizon and they say this card support CDMA technology, is that compatible with with pagegate??

Ah, unfortunately not. That device doesn't support the GSM-AT command set, which means that the device doesn't support external SMS
commands. There are, however, devices you can use to send direct SMS, such as the Multitech GPRS cellular modem. Our program can also send
out SMS via the Internet and by dial-up modem.

CDMA is the network technology that Verizon and Sprint use - GSM is used by ATT and TMobile. The "AT" Command set is not natively supported on CDMA devices but some manufacturors have created chipsets that will interact with AT commands.
