The SMS cell phones I'm trying to send SMS text pages to are Verizon Treo 700wx. When I test from the command prompt on Win XP sp3 with telnet smtp-bb.vtext.com 25, I get a 554 error with Connection to Host lost.

I'm using 45.sub-75-218-125.myvzw.com as my IP - tethered with PDAnet. I can get SNPP to American Paging to work on the same connection, but so far the Verizon SMS gateway doesn't work. I also tried 10digitphonenumber@myvzw.com same results.

I am still on my 30 day eval, but using SMS for text paging is critical. I should have the firewall open Friday so I can test using ethernet instead of tethered USB. The firewall has a tested public IP address that should not be blacklisted.

Any ideas?

Second question - will I be able to send SMS text pages using the MultiTech cellular modem on the Verizon CDMA network?

The 554 rejection notice indicates that Verizon's mail host doesn't accept direct connection requests from your network. In cases like this, you can either use a local mail server to deliver your messages or use a Cellular Modem, which has to do with your second question.

To answer your second question, yes and it's probably the single most reliable way to deliver messages to any carrier, Verizon included.

Thanks for the answer. Is it overkill to have two MultiTech cellular modems, say one for Sprint and one for Verizon?

It is overkill - if you are looking for redundancy and decide that you can't live without 2 Cellular Modems but want different carriers, I'd vary my flavors and have one CDMA (Verizon or Sprint) and one GSM (ATT or TMobile)
