Hi All,

I have a PageGate server at Site A with a modem connected to it, and another server running Scope at Site B also with a modem. Scope sends data using Tapi, therefore I have set it to dial the Site A and send a message about the status of the system. Here's what happens when it dials Site A:

22/11/2012 12:58:04 Received:ATS0=1<CR><CR><LF>OK<CR><LF><CR><LF>RING<CR><LF>

22/11/2012 12:58:47 Received:ATS0=1<CR><CR><LF>OK<CR><LF>

On PageGate I have setup a carrier to use SMTP, ideally I would like it to email me.

I have also setup a recipient with a specified email address - when the above happens in the Log I also get an on-screen error:
Run-time error '8018':

Operation valid only when the port is open

Any help on this would be great, i'm fairly new to the scene but need to get to grips with the system.

Thanks in advance

What do you have the baud rate, data bits, parity and stop bits set to both in GetTAP and your sending TAP system?

Your post said sending site "B" is using "Tapi" - I assume this is a typo. The protocol your PageGate at site "A" is looking for is "TAP" (Telocator Alphanumeric Protocol), not "TAPI" (Telephony Application Programming Interface)

After the other systems connects, it's supposed to send a carriage return ( <CR> ) to start the protocol. It looks like all it does is send a linefeed ( <LF> ), and then hangs up after four seconds.

I have posted an updated GetTAP module that may help, but you may have to look into why the other end isn't sending the carriage return (as specified by the TAP protocol).

You can download the update here:

I'll give it a go and report back.

The other system is a Scope server which collects radio transmissions from other local devices and then reports back.

There doesn't appear to be anywhere on the software to change how it communicates. This has definitely worked with PageGate before because this unit was being maintained by a company (now gone into administration) who were using PageGate for the job.

Hence why it needs to be recreated

Still no joy - i've been given the following log off the remote system:

Initialising Modem
>> ATZ
ATZ

OK
>> ATE0 S7=30M1L2
ATE0 S7=30M1L2

OK
>> ATS2?
COM EVENT 1

043

OK
>> ATS12?
COM EVENT 1

050

OK
Dialing Contact Number "XXXXXXXXXXX"
COM EVENT 1

NO CARRIER
>> ATZ
COM EVENT 1

OK
NO CARRIER
This Test has failed, modem response to dial command is
"NO CARRIER"

I have blanked the telephone number out - please ignore

Any other suggestions?

Send your direct contact info - I'd like to test something. I'll have one of my PageGate systems dial yours and use TAP to complete a message. This will help narrow down the problem to either SENDING or RECEIVING end.

What does the GetTap log in PageGate look like for that same session you posted above?

Hi All,

Another update - I decided to install PageGate on one of my old laptops with a built in modem and everything is working as expected.

Which now means that the culprit is most probably the PC or modem that it was running on.

At least I have a working system now and i've got more time to move things around.

Top tip from me - try it on totally different hardware in a different location with a different modem to help isolate the problem :)

Thanks everyone for your help on this

Do you have any logs from the Base Station Scope Software from when it was working? I'd like to see what kind of requests and responses it uses when working correctly. That should at least clear up once and for all what protocols it is using.
