PostPosted: Tue Mar 30, 2010 10:59 am    Post subject: Split SMS Group Messages into Individual Connections? Reply with quote

We're currently sending the bulk of our messages out to our users through SMS and it works really well except for one problem. Our SMS modem is through Verizon and they have limits on our messaging set to 10 messages per connection. Some of my groups have more than 10 recipients in them; therefore, when I queue a message for this group, my modem dials once and sends all of the messages at once. Verizon then sends the first 10 and drops the rest. I get no errors in PageGate because Verizon accepted them all, then just never send the rest above 10.

Is there a way to tell PageGate to only send a set number of messages per connection? So if I have a group of 20 people, PageGate will dial Verizon, send 10 messages, drop the connection, immediately dial Verizon again and send the other 10.

If not, what does everyone else do when they send most of their messages through SMS? How do you get around these restrictions?

Thanks for your help.

Jeff

You can set a carrier level message limit by going into the PageGate Admin, then going into the Advanced sub-section of your carrier.

And that's what that setting is for? Sorry to be a n00b. I'm just making sure I understand before I set it.

So if I set a limit to 2, if I have a group of 10 messages that all go out the same carrier, PageGate will dial the carrier 5 times and send 2 messages each time, correct?

Thanks for your help.

Jeff,

Precisely. If you set the message limit to 10, it will connect with the carrier and send 10 messages, then wait for a few seconds and connect and send the next 10 and so forth until they've all been sent.

That should be exactly what I needed!

I just created 9 more of myself, added all 10 of me to a group and sent the group a message. Does it look correct to you? The reason I ask is that I only received 4 of the 10 messages. My guess is that it's Verizon still screwing me and I'll take it up with them, but I saw a couple of "ERROR" lines in there and wanted to clear it with you before I light them up again.

Thank you,

Jeff

From what I can tell, the program is queueing up the messages with the cellular modem properly. Now, it does strike me as a little odd that they don't seem to support the AT+CMGF=1 command, which is where the errors in the log are coming from. I mean, it isn't a required command, the program will continue on and deliver the messages regardless but... I'd ask them about it.

Could it have something to do with the fact that I'm doing this with Verizon, who is not GSM, but CDMA?

I set this up with Aaron Osbourne, a frequent poster on this site and am confident in him, though I haven't run this error by him.

The command "AT+CMGF=1" is part of the GSM-AT specification. GSM devices require this command to force the modem to enter "Text Message" mode. MultiTech's CDMA devices do not accept this command since it is not needed. Since the CDMA device does not respond to the command, PageGate simply stamps "ERROR" (basically, "I did not get the expected reply") and goes to the next step "Working on message".

Aaron,

I was hoping you'd hop in here. I assumed it was something like that.

So it sounds to me, like I figured, that Verizon has some shoddy SMS service. At least for my purposes anyway.

I have been on my rep's case to get this figured out. This just confirms to me that they have some 'splainin' to do.

Thank you for all the help.

What is your signal strength? From HyperTerminal = enter AT+CSQ

THis will return something like "14,99"

For CDMA the number BEFORE the comma is the important one and is a scale of 1-31. Most of my Verizon installations run between 12 and 20. Anything lower than 5 indicates extremely weak signal and may be the source of your problem

I am seeing a very similar problem! I also have the MT modem from Verizon from Ozcom, and people aren't receiving all messages. Some are, some aren't, very random.

However, all messages are "successful" in the logs... identical to your logs.

My signal strength is 22,99

I just bumped my carrier limit down to 3.

Sending to the same 10 person group, I just sent a few messages and got every single one!

This could be a wonderful day.

For anyone else having this problem, go to the Advanced Settings on your carrier you use for SMS and change the Msg Limit to 3. It takes a little longer for your messages to go, but it would appear you're going to have a much better chance of them actually making it.

I changed the limit to 3. Then I sent myself 10 messages and received almost every other msg.
