The size of the database is 512K and it appears that no more recipients can be added. I'm still running a tepmporary license while I'm waiting for procurement to cut the check for the software.

Is it true that the database size is limited until the license key is added?

The database size is not limited by the software, even in the trial version mode. The size of the database is directly determined by the number of recipients and groups you have added in and the number of messages you're keeping in active memory.
