I'm trying to see if I can get PageGate running with my MultiTech USB attached cellular modem, and I'm having difficulties with sending messages.

I am able to connect up to the modem just fine with HyperTerminal in Windows and send an SMS message that way. It's using COM3 with 115200-n-8-1 settings. There were the settings that were automatically set when I installed the modem.

I installed pagegate. I created a new carrier, selecting GSM-AT for the protocol. I set the other parameters to match my HyperTerminal settings as well as choosing Auto for the Init string. I then setup a Connector using Auto as the init string, blank prefix, specified the carrier that I setup, and choose serial port 3 (to match the COM port number). I left the direct connect option unchecked. Lastly I created a recipient with a Normal type, choose my carrier, entered my cell phone number as the ID/PIN, and left the rest default.

To test, I right-click on my recipient and choose to send a message. I enter the subject and body and send. It shows up in the pending messages of my carrier and just sits there. When I look at the log file of the connector, it just repeats the following.

7/28/2008 2:44:24 PM Start connection to carrier: standard
7/28/2008 2:44:24 PM Connect using GSM protocol
7/28/2008 2:44:24 PM Setting communication parameters (115200,n,8,1)
7/28/2008 2:44:25 PM Attempting to reset modem
7/28/2008 2:44:27 PM Module Stopped
7/28/2008 2:44:34 PM Module Started
7/28/2008 2:44:38 PM Time synchronized with scheduler

Can anyone tell me what I am missing?

Well... I don't know that you're missing anything but I do have a few questions. What version of Windows are you using? Also,w hat make and model of MultiTech modem are you using?

This is on a Windows XP SP3 computer. The model of the multitech is MTCBA-G-U-F4. It's also referred to as a MultiModem GPRS, which uses a USB connection.

Well, I moved the modem onto the server that it was intended for, hoping that it would work there. The server is a windows 2003 box. But I still get the exact same issue.

Did you use the MANUAL install procedure (3 different components) or Windows New Hardware automatic install?

I followed the install steps in the documentation. 3 separate "found new hardware" windows where I pointed it to the drivers folder on the CD each time.

It seems to be installed correctly. I can use HyperTerminal on the server and send myself SMS messages that way. For some reason, I can't see what I am typing in the HyperTerminal window, but it does display the output to my commands.

Using the PageGate monitor, I was able to see an additional line of logging. I get a "Program Halted. Database error: 3219 Invalid operation. in Procedure: SendGSM".

I have reinstalled, making sure that the database was deleted before the new install.

Also, I have noted different behavior wether or not the Direct Connect box is checked in the Connector. If it is not checked, I get the following messages repeated.

8/20/2008 11:18:20 AM ========================================
8/20/2008 11:18:20 AM Start connection to carrier: stnadard
8/20/2008 11:18:20 AM Connect using GSM protocol
8/20/2008 11:18:20 AM Setting communication parameters (115200,n,8,1)
8/20/2008 11:18:20 AM Attempting to reset modem
8/20/2008 11:18:22 AM Program Halted. Database error: 3219 Invalid operation. in Procedure: SendGSM
8/20/2008 11:18:30 AM Module Started
8/20/2008 11:18:31 AM Time synchronized with scheduler

If it is checked, I get this.

8/20/2008 11:19:28 AM ========================================
8/20/2008 11:19:28 AM Start connection to carrier: stnadard
8/20/2008 11:19:28 AM Connect using GSM protocol
8/20/2008 11:19:28 AM Setting communication parameters (115200,n,8,1)
8/20/2008 11:19:29 AM ----------------------------------------
8/20/2008 11:19:29 AM Working on message to: jeff from: jeff
8/20/2008 11:19:29 AM Formatting message
8/20/2008 11:19:29 AM Message contained in a single packet
8/20/2008 11:19:29 AM Sending packet
8/20/2008 11:19:29 AM Program Halted. Database error: 3219 Invalid operation. in Procedure: SendGSM
8/20/2008 11:19:36 AM Module Started
8/20/2008 11:19:37 AM Time synchronized with scheduler

Regardless, I still get the database error.

That's usually indicative of a COM port issue. What COM port is the GSM Modem installed to and what Serial port do you have the connector set to?

I double checked in the device manager that the modem is on COM3 (using a USB cable). I am also able to use hyperterminal on com3 to communicate with the device.

In Connector1, it is set for serial port 3.

Hi

Unfortunetly I have very simillar issue. When I try to send sms I got this log:

2/24/2009 1:59:16 PM ========================================
2/24/2009 1:59:16 PM Start connection to carrier: GSM
2/24/2009 1:59:16 PM Connect using GSM protocol
2/24/2009 1:59:16 PM Setting communication parameters (19200,n,8,1)
2/24/2009 1:59:17 PM Attempting to reset modem
2/24/2009 1:59:19 PM Program Halted. Database error: 3219 Invalid operation. in Procedure: SendGSM
2/24/2009 1:59:26 PM Module Started
2/24/2009 1:59:28 PM Time synchronized with scheduler

And this if I mark "direct connection" in connectors settings:
2/24/2009 2:12:07 PM ========================================
2/24/2009 2:12:07 PM Start connection to carrier: GSM
2/24/2009 2:12:07 PM Connect using GSM protocol
2/24/2009 2:12:07 PM Setting communication parameters (19200,n,8,1)
2/24/2009 2:12:08 PM ----------------------------------------
2/24/2009 2:12:08 PM Working on message to: aja from: f
2/24/2009 2:12:08 PM Formatting message
2/24/2009 2:12:08 PM Message contained in a single packet
2/24/2009 2:12:08 PM Sending packet
2/24/2009 2:12:08 PM Program Halted. Database error: 3219 Invalid operation. in Procedure: SendGSM
2/24/2009 2:12:15 PM Module Started
2/24/2009 2:12:18 PM Time synchronized with scheduler

I'm sure I use proper COM port and my device responses to AT commands. I can also send SMS via this device using another software, which works based on AT commands.
I tried with two devices: nokia 6230i and nokia E51 - the same result.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Best regards

pb

Thank for Your reply

Device is connected to COM4 and this number is set as "SerialPort" in connector 1 settings. In Windows Device Manager I can see that modem nokia e51 is connected to COM4. I can check connectivity through Windows Device Manager and I see that modem responds to AT commands. What is more i can use other software to sends sms and I set the same port number.
Any other clues? Thanks in advance.

Generally that error means iether the COM port doesn't exist or something else is monitoring the COM port. In your case, I'd say that something else is monitoring the COM port because you can access the Cellular modem with hyperterminal, for example.

Do you run Routing and Remote Access, any Fax programs that would 'autolisten' on any COM ports, anything like that?

I used different application for sms sending, but I'm sure all are turned off and not running as Windows services. I want to integrate NotePage with HP OpenView NNM (for this reason I had to run Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and SNMP services). I can add that I try to run PageGate on Virtual Machine Windows 2003 server. But the reason I think, that it should work fine is, that I used other programs (like Microsoft SMSSender, NowSMS), which also use COM port and AT commands, and they worked ok.
