|

Hi there, I'm just trialling the 30day version of NotepagerPro. I'm sending a numeric message to a pager using 'tone' as the carrier. Message is sent & received OK, but Notepager does not dsiconnect from the Com port to allow it to be available to another software programme that needs to run after this. It also seems to lock the Com port as when I go into Control panel & modems & query the modem, it says it cannot find it. I then have to reset it. Thanks for your help.

What type of modem do you have and is it an internal or an external modem? |

Since that's the case, you may want to check on an updated driver for the modem. I've seen this happen a few times where the driver had a quirk that wouldn't let the program release the COM port for whatever reason. I'd recommend going to the Windows Update site and doing the Custom scan. It should give you a list of Hardware updates, see if your modem has an update available. |

Thank you. I've now changed modems to an external US Robotics 56k faxmodem and installed the software supplied with it. But I'm still getting the error message "Com port couldn't be opened' from the programme that needs to run after Notepager. Thank you for your help.

Just to check on something, after you close the program, bring up the Task Manager in Windows and see if nppdial.exe is still in the Applications or Processes list. If it is, end the Process or the Task and then try the other program. |

NPPDial is not there after I close Notepager & my other programme works. However, I am running a schedule in Notepager so don't I need to keep the programme open for the schedule to run please? Many thanks.

If you have a schedule set up in the program, the program has to be running in order for the schedule to execute at the appropriate time. Since NotePager Pro can't run as a Windows Service, it can only run as an Application, the Application has to be running for it to process data and messages. |

So does this mean it has to hang onto the port? The programme that I need to run after Notepager is also on a schedule and this doesn't hang on to the port. Thank you for your help.

A band aid solution may be to run 2 modems - dedicate 1 to NotePager asnd the other to your other package. Alternatively - you may want to look into upgrading to PageGate_________________ Aaron D. Osgood

The solution OzCom mentioned is a good one, having two modems, but to answer your question, it doesn't mean that the program has to hang on to the COM port to do what it needs to do... but it will need access to the COM port when it's time to send the messages in your schedule. |

PageGate software runs as a Windows Service. Download a free evaluation at http://www.notepage.net/software.htm
