Hi all

When German umlauts (äöü, ÄÖÜ) are used in the subject, there is nothing readable sent.
if the umlauts are in the message area, they are not existent.

For example:
Code:
Subject : "Message with umlauts äöü ÄÖÜ"
Body    : NULL
sent    : =?iso-8859-1?B?TWVzc2FnZSB3aXRoIHVtbGF1dHMg5Pb8IMTW3A==?= --
same in the log

If I setup the message as follows:
Code:
Subject :NULL
Body    : "Message with umlauts äöü ÄÖÜ"
sent    : ""Message with umlauts --"

in the Log one could read:
Code:
Msg:message with umlauts <228><246><252> <228><246><252><13><10>--

Is there any way to enable PG for a charset like this? (I think WE8ISO8859P1 / P15 or WE8MSWIN1252 should work)

Thanks in advance and have a nice weekend.

Regards Jimmy

What carrier or connection are you trying to send these messages to and how are they being generated (from the GUI Client, GetWeb, GetTAP, GetSerial, GetMail) ?

Also, the reason the umlauts aren't in the body of the message is that you have the "drop non-printable characters" option checked in the settings of your recipients/groups.

Just as a sidenote, I know for a fact that MOST paging terminals in the US will error out if they see an umlaut in the body of the message.

They were originally programmed with a limited ASCII translation table to conserve memory. Basically they have A-Z, a-z, 0-9, and a handful of "common" symbols. Anything outside that rangeand they get confused.

Hi

Sorry, I forgot to tell the whole story :$
Well, we are in Switzerland, the Umlauts are part of our main language.....

We generate the messages by SMTP, GetMail and afterwards is a SMTP forwarding, when Internet SMS Provider is reachable and ISDN instead.
It doesn't matter, if I send it directly via ISDN to Swisscom, or if I send it via eMail Forwarding to the SMS Provider...
It also doesn't matter if I reroute it via our Exchange server (Outlook Client) to Pagegate or if I send it with Outlook Express to Pagegate.
It also doesn't matter, if one of our monitoring and alerting tools is sending the message out of a linux or windows machine.
As soon as a umlaut is in the Subject, baaam...

If we send exactly the same message directly to our SMS Provider (e.g. Oultook Express, or with setting the rerouting of Exchange Server to the Provider), everything worked well...

Also, it doesn't matter, if I hit the Option "Drop non printable character", it's every time the same....

When I'm back in the office at monday, I will cut off some log entries (if you tell me, what you like to see, I can provide the log entries more exactly.

Regards
Jimmy

Addendum:
If I try to send a message with umlauts via the GUI Client, it swallows the umlauts completely.
That is, what I sent:
Code:
Test mit Umlaut äöü Kapital ÄaÖoÜu

That is, what is in the log:
Code:
Test mit Umlaut <228><246><252> Kapital <196>a<214>o<220>u

And that is, what I've received on my cellphone:
Code:
Test mit Umlaut Kapital a o u

Maybe this helps.
Otherwise, if you need some logs, let me know, where to send.

Thanks in advance
Jimmy

Hello again

Tested the new version as mentioned in this thread :

When I put the following message:
Code:

Subject : "Test mit Umlauten äöü und GROSS ÄÖÜ"
Body    : NULL
Everything as expected
Code:

Subject : "Test mit Umlauten äöü und GROSS ÄÖÜ"
Body    : "und im Body äöü und GROSS ÄÖÜ"
Everything as expected
Code:

Subject : NULL
Body    : "Test mit Umlauten im Body äöü und GROSS ÄÖÜ"
All text is sent in lowercase--> I think this is not really a heavy issue, but I wanted to mention the behaviour in all cases.

Actually, I can live wiht this behaviour, so if you like to correct the lowercase issue, feel free, for me personally it's not really relevant... (Who is sending a messge using only the body?)

Great job, but it's a pity, that we didn't receive an info (within this thread, by newsletter or anyhow) about the release of a new version...

Best regards
Jimmy

Jimmy,

There wasn't a public thread about it because the build was (literally) posted yesterday. There are still a few more tests I wanted to run before we started posting major threads about it but part of the fix was specifically designed to handle the umlauts, so I wanted to post here first.
