|
|
I am trying to install Notepage Pro on a W2K PRO desktop such that the "administrator" would have write/modify access to the database (carrier and recipient) and that normal (non-power) users could only run the program and send pages. I initially tried the installation while logged on as administrator, but was unable to get Notepage Pro to run under a normal user account .. even after granting that user "full control" privilidges under W2K (Notepage Pro reported that it was unable to lock file??). I then removed Notepage Pro form the W2K system and did the installation from a user account with "power user" (but non-administrator) permissions and then set up separate user and superuser passwords to control access separately to the program and to the carrier and recipient files. The Notepage Pro does does require a user password in order to execute the program. However, even after changing the user permissions back to those of a normal (non-power) user, the user is able to change the carrier and recipient files without entering the separate superuser password. Any suggestions on how to properly set up the system to accomplish the above will be appreciated.

Note: Before you do this, make a backup of the c:\program files\notepager pro\npp.mdb file.
1) Completely uninstall the program.
2) After the program has been uninstalled, browse to the c:\program files\ directory. If the NotePager Pro directory still exists, delete
it.
3) Reboot the computer.
4) Please re-download the installation file from our website (http://www.notepage.net - click on the download link in the center of the page under the NotePager Pro section).
5) After you've re-downloaded the notepagerpro.exe installation file, run it.
6) When you reinstall the program, change the installation directory to c:\notepager pro\ instead of c:\program files\notepager pro\
Once you've reinstalled the program to c:\notepager pro\ , copy the npp.mdb file into the directory

Thanks for the quick response. Should I do the install under a W2K administrator account or under a W2K user (power user) account?

I'd recommend doing the installation under the administrative account. That way, everything is properly registered in Windows during the installation and you don't have to worry about other, limited users being able to run the program.

Thanks again .. your advice was excellent and very timely. Unfortunately I am now running into a SORBS "reject" problem (www.sorbs.net) when I try to send a smtp page to a metrocall (page.metrocall.com) subscriber. So I thought I would try the snpp setup for metrocall (snpp.metrocall.com), but I find that setup requires a host and password field ... I tried using snpp.metrocall.com for the host field and left the password blank and that did not work. I would prefer to not use the TAP setup if possible. Any further suggestions?

Actually, the host IS snpp.metrocall.com and you can ignore the password field. Not every SNPP host required a password but some do, so we had to to include the field in the setup.

Thank You again!! You have been very helpful in resolving my SNPP issues.
Now, perhaps one final question .... is there a means of getting a permanent file/record of pages sent that could only be deleted by a "super user" or "system administrator"? It appears that when a normal user logs off the W2K system and then later logs back on the sent record has been purged. Since there are many different people/accounts on the W2K system it is necessary to have an audit procedure in place to preclude abuse.

The master records for the program aren't purged when the system logs off or logs back on or even when the system reboots.
If you'll look in the PageGate directory on the hard drive, you'll notice a series of Log files. Those log files contain every transaction and function the program has undertaken.
Also, if you run a report on the SERVER copy of the PageGate Admin, it will reference every message sent by every workstation and give you the workstation number as well.

Thank you again ... however, I am not using PageGate ... but NotePage Pro. I do not see any log files in the NotePage Pro directory, but examining the npp database file in that directory I did find a np_messages table that appears to contain what I am looking for. What are the operating parameters for this table (i.e. what is its max size before it starts over-writing entries, etc).

Ah, since you're using NotePager Pro, you'll see the npp.log file in the NotePager Pro directory. That's the main program log. If you want to know what the operating parameters for the logging (and the messages table) are, go to Tools - Settings - General, in NotePager Pro.
