Reasons why when running as service app won't connect?

Hello,

We're running PageGate and the web interface on a Windows XP box that we are using as a web server. While running PageGate as an application, everything works fine, but when we switch over to the desired method of running as service, we can no longer connect to any paging hosts.

Does anybody know why this might be?

When you run an application, it uses the credentials of whatever user you're currently logged into Windows with.

System Services, on the other hand, have their own credentials which stand apart from the user you're logged in as.

Chances are, your PageGate Windows Services are using the Default System Account credentials for Windows. For whatever reason, the Default System Account for Windows has insufficient permissions to properly access what it needs.

My recommendation would be to either find or create an administrative usernamd and password that has the "Log on as Service" Local Security Policy and assign your PageGate System Services that specific set of credentials.

Thanks. That worked. Just a note for the next victim. You must qualify the username with the domain (i.e. <domain>\<username> ).
