What is the advantage of setting up the software to work through the internet versus using dial up?

The benefit of using the Internet vs Modem delivery for SMS messages is as follows:
1) Internet based delivery doesn't require a phone line or a modem, it only requires that the computer be connected to the Internet.
2) Internet delivery is generally faster than modem delivery.
The only downside is that if the Internet goes down or is unavailable, you can't send messages.

In addition to Tech Support's excellent points:
Don't confuse "dial up" with TAP - Traditionally, the term "Dial Up" refers to a dial up internet connection. TAP messaging requires that your PC uses a modem and phone line to dial a specific paging carrier directly, transmit the message, and break the connection.
The vast majority of PAGING CARRIERS still support TAM modems but most cellular providers do not. To text most cell phones, your PC will need an internet connection (it can be dial up or broadband)._________________ Aaron D. Osgood

To configure NotePager Pro to send out pages over the internet, you have to know which of the three internet protocols your carrier supports. The three online protocols are: SNPP, WCTP, SMTP.
SMTP is the most widely supported of the three, so here's how to configure an SMTP Carrier in NotePager Pro:
1) Left click on the Carriers menu.
2) Left click on Add.
3) Name the carrier: SMTP
4) Change the Protocol to: SMTP
5) Your Local Domain needs to be set to the latter half of your email address. In this case, you would enter: bol.net.in
6) Enter in your Primary DNS into DNS Server 1 and your Secondary DNS into DNS Server 2. If you're not sure what either of these are, please contact your internet service provider or network admin and ask them.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Now that the Carrier has been added, left click on Recipients.
2) Left click on Add.
3) You can name the recipient whatever you like.
4) The Type should be normal and change the Carrier to SMTP.
5) In the "Email To" field, enter the email address for a phone, pager, or just a regular email address (like support@notepage.com). If you're not sure what your device's email address is, we do keep a current list of email suffixes for the various carriers here: http://www.notepage.net/smtp.htm
6) Make sure that Alpha and Drop non-printable characters are cheked.
7) Click on Apply.

I can choose some to be Internet and others to be dial up, or tmp, in the same group correct? Since these are two different methods, one using the modem, and the other my network card, can they also both operate at the same time?

Yes
I assume, from your login name, you are using this in an Emergency Management Agency setting. We have installed Notepager Pro's "Big Brother" (PageGate) - in numerous EMA's and Public Safety dispatch centers around the country. Feel free to contact us directly off list if you'd like some references_________________ Aaron D. Osgood

OzCom,
Thanks for the offer. I think I am starting to figure out the program, and how it operates. I really only have one last question. With the choice of TAP, SNPP, WCTP and STMP which is best to use? I now understand that STMP is not the best to us as it is not time sensitive, hence slower, according to the http://notepager.com/smtp.htm. Our application is for notifying our HAZ MAT team. TAP may not be supported for cell phones. This leaves SNNP and WCTP. I presume that one of these is the best to use overall because it is quicker being internet and not dial up plus there is greater time sensitivity and it should support most all mediums, cell and pager. But which one?[/url]

In an attempt to simplify - SNPP and WCTP can be looked at as sort of an internet application of TAP (Think of it as TAP withoug the modem connection). Your problem is that there is no universal protocol accepted by ALL carriers - each carrier chooses what protocol or protocols to support. As a professional firefighter/Paramedic/ HazMat tech WMD specialist (IAFF L740) - my connection preferences for critical messaging are in order:
SNPP
WCTP
GSM
TAP
SMTP_________________ Aaron D. Osgood
