Hello All,
I'm using Notepager Pro V3 with Win2k on two machines, both with USR Sportster 28.8's. One PC works great! The other...I can not get the modem to accept the init string. In the log on the pc that is not working it says something to the effect of "sending modem init string" "couldn't send init string". I've taken this modem and used it on the machine that works and have had no problems. So I know the modem is NOT a factor. Could someone please shed some light on why one PC can send an init string and the other one cannot? Obviously, I cannot connect to my carrier when the modem is trying to negoetiate a 28.8 connection.
Any clues would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott

If you send the database from each machine (npp.mdb) to forumsupport@notepage.com, we can take a look and see if there is any difference.
Other things to try/check:
Make sure there isn't another modem (possibly built in) in the computer that isn't working.
Make sure another serial port (possibly built in) isn't conflicting with the modem.
Make sure another device isn't using the same irq (interrupt) as the modem.
Download and install the latest modem driver from the manufacturer.

Both machines are Compaq / HP Evo commercial desktop workstations. They have no built in modem.

There are no other serial devices used on either machine.

See above answer.

There is no sportster 28.8 driver available. USR's site says it is built into windows.
The problem is, as stated before, that only on one machine does your software not succeed in sending the init string to the modem. After it fails sending the init string it continues on and dials the carrier. Since the modem does not recieve the init string it cannot communicate with the carrier. Both pc's are identical. One works the other one does not. And it is only because the modem does not recieve the proper init string.
Thanks for your reply!

This may take a little time/work, but I would like you to try to figure out what part of the init string the modem doesn't like
I would like you to start with the first command in the init string, and send a test message. Then add the commands one by one until you get the message that it can't send the init string
Here would be the strings to try:
AT&F0
AT&F0Q0
AT&F0Q0V1
AT&F0Q0V1X4
AT&F0Q0V1X4&D2
AT&F0Q0V1X4&D2&B1
AT&F0Q0V1X4&D2&B1&K0
AT&F0Q0V1X4&D2&B1&K0&M0
AT&F0Q0V1X4&D2&B1&K0&M0&N2
Please note that all the '0' are zeros.
