Hi,
I would like to use this program to send snpp messages to Cingular phones. I've opened port 444. It says it's not accepting the ID/PIN number, but I know I've got the correct phone number. I'm still getting the following message in the dialer log (thanks for the help!):

11/9/2006 9:18:45 AM Formatting message

The Cingular SNPP and WCTP hosts aren't public hosts. The only numbers listed in the Cingular SNPP and WCTP hosts are their "Enterprise Paging" clients. The only public hosts that Cingular offers are SMTP and TAP.

Thanks for the quick response! I'm new to this so this is probably a dumb question, but what's the difference between TAP and SMTP. All I want to do is send brief text messages to a static group of about 20 Cingular users.

The SMTP protocol uses a carrier's mail host (in this case, cingularME.com) to deliver a message.
The TAP protocol uses a modem to contact the modem bank of a carrier to deliver the messages directly.
As a general rule, TAP will be more reliable than SMTP is terms of message delivery but it is a slower protocol because it relies on a modem.

Using TAP, this is the error I get. Do I need to have a dialup modem setup on my computer?

Correct. In order to use the TAP protocol, you do have to have a dial-up modem installed in your system. When you do install a dial-up modem, it will assign the modem a COM port. Write down what COM port it assigned to the modem, then go to the Tools - Settings - Modem section of the program and change the modem port to whatever COM port the modem was assigned.

OK, that makes sense.
While I've got your ear...another capability we need is to collect responses to the messages we send. Does NotePage Pro or PageGate allow this funcionality?

The best answer I can give is sort of.
Pagegate and NotePager Pro can't really collect responses directly but there is a way that responses can be collected.
When either program sends an SMTP message, it has to have an identifying "sender's" email address. You could put an email address in your sender's name and, if you deliver your messages via SMTP to your recipients, they will have the "Reply To" option. When they reply, it will go to that email address.

That would actually be perfect to have replies sent to an email address. To setup SMTP, in what field do I type the mail host (cingularME.com)?

Here's how to configure an SMTP Carrier in NotePager Pro:
1) Left click on the Carriers menu.
2) Left click on Add.
3) Name the carrier: Cingular
4) Change the Protocol to: SMTP
5) Your Local Domain needs to be set to the latter half of your email address.
6) Enter in your Primary DNS into DNS Server 1 and your Secondary DNS into DNS Server 2. If you're not sure what either of these are, please contact your internet service provider or network admin and ask them.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Now that the Carrier has been added, left click on Recipients.
2) Left click on Add.
3) You can name the recipient whatever you like.
4) The Type should be normal and change the Carrier to SMTP.
5) In the "Email To" field, enter the email address for a phone, pager, or just a regular email address (like support@notepage.com). Since you want to send messages to Cingular, you would use 10digitcelnumber@cingularME.com
6) Make sure that Alpha and Drop non-printable characters are cheked.
7) Click on Apply.

Sweet -- it worked!!
I'm doing this on a network called JGCP1, so the sender email address was JGCP1@ku.edu. Is there a way to have responses sent to a different address on the same domain, like jaybuz@ku.edu??

Go to the Tools - Settings - General section and change the sender's name to jaybuz if you want the reply to address to be jaybuz@ku.edu
