Please help! I am in the UK. I am new to this kind of stuff.
1. I've downloaded the evaluation copy of this software and installed it.
2. I am using an NTL Broadband (Cable connection) to get on the net.
3. My own mobile account is with O2(UK) Limited - this may be a problem to track down as these companies keep changing names so often!! For the purposes of this mail let's say that my mobile number is: 07123 123456 and my pin number is 33344
4. For test purposes I want to set up a recipient named John Smith whose mobile number is 07222 333333 and has a pin number of 55566.
Now :
(a) How do I set this up with your software ? Please provide full details - I think it would be useful to many other potential users. In the UK, Vodafone, Orange, O2 etc form the main carriers.
(b) My confusion also has to do with the fact that I thought sending text message is bound to involve some costs and in order for those to recovered the mail server would require some form of identifcation as to the sender so that billing could be organised. IF IT'S FREE I AM NOT COMPLAINING!!
Thanks in advance.

Is O2 the same carrier that used to be 'One2One'? If so, we can probably help. If not, what did they used to call themselves?

I've been on the phone to O2(UK) - the info I have is they used to be known as (BT) Cellnet and are quoted on the London Stock Exchange as MM02.
I hope this helps. I think I've seen an entry for Cellnet during the web page hopping I've been doing.
They too are "surprised that you do not know who they are" ?!!

I do have some information that may work.
First, it doesn't appear that they will accept messages over the Internet. You will need a regular analog modem and phone line attached to your computer.
Next, you will need to create a new carrier in NotePager Pro and set it to use the 'TAP' protocol. The carrier phone number could be one of the following:
44 0901 1130000 for UK BT EasyReach
44 0345 581354 for UK BT Pager
44 07860 980480 for UK Cellnet
Next you need to create a new recipient and set it to use the carrier you just setup. Then use the mobile phone number you are trying to send to for the ID/PIN number.

Thanks for the info - it'll take me some time to try this out as I need to get access to a tele line etc.
I've still some points (I've raised earlier) that need clarifying/confirming:
1. Use of the proposed telephone line is because the carrier in this case, O2 doesn't accept internet messaging. Knowing BT, I would probably find that the line needs to be a BT line as well.
2. So it looks to me like the carrier information required by NotePager is the carrier used by the recipient (NOT THE CARRIER OF MY OWN MOBILE).
3. The carrier of my own mobile is not relevant as the usage will be free of charge providing the recipient's carrier allows internet connections to send messages.
4. How do we know whether the recipients pin code is required as well given that we will (perhaps) know who the carrier is ? And if it is, then is the exact input format '07123 444555/12345' where the last 5 digits repesent the pin code. [It is unfortunate this requirement for the pin code as I dont think many mobile users will want to give that information out]
PLEASE CONFIRM WHETHER I'VE GOT THESE POINTS CORRECT OR OTHERWISE.
THANKS IN ADVANCE

Answers:
1. The phone line for your modem should work with any land-line carrier
2. Yes. The carrier information is for the carrier the phone is on that you want to send the message to.
3. Yes. Your phone's carrier isn't important
4. Typically the ID/PIN for the phone you are sending to is just the phone number.
Just to further confuse matters, there is another way to send messages using NotePager Pro. It doesn't work with all phones so I didn't mention it earlier. If you mobile phone allows you to hook it up to your computer via a serial cable, then NotePager Pro can send messages out through your mobile phone. There are a few downsides to this setup.
1. Your phone has to be attached to the computer
2. There may be charges associated with sending the messages
3. Not all mobile phones support the GSMAT protocol necessary to support this.
