Does anybody have an opinion on what the best modem brand and model series to use? We would like to recommend to our customers a particular brand and model (or series) so that our set-up is consistent (like init string) and troubleshooting is also consistent.

Also, would people recommend regular serial port, USB, or internal. Generally I'm talking about one dialer, but maybe two or three.

Thanks!

We have found the most reliable setup to be external US Robotics Sportster modems (RS232 - not USB).

The USR modems seem to connect to just about all carriers without a problem. Being external has two advantages:
1. It can't be a Winmodem - winmodems have trouble with many carriers
2. It is easily swapped if it developes a problem

The second best modem would be any external modem (again RS232 serial, not USB).

Don't be afraid to use old 1200, 2400, or 9600 modems. The older ones actually work better, in many cases, than new v.90 and v.92 modems.
