We are having trouble sending all SMTP messages today. Cingular, Blackberry, Verizon, everything. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

I haven't heard any other reports of this, though I do know that generally when all communication on port 25 (the SMTP port) is having difficulty, you may be experiencing either a regional or ISP-wide DNS issue. Check with your service provider, see if they've had any problems or any similar reports.

A quick troubleshooting test to isolate the problem is to use your e-mail package to send a message to your device. If your E-mail package fails, it is most likely the Port 25 issue. Have someone outside your network send an e-mail to the device as well - if it works, the problem is on your end

I have two networks available. A cable modem and the City network. I have tried each and I am able to page using WCTP and SNPP, but not SMTP.

DNS seems to be working because it will say:
Looking up mailserver for nextel.blackberry.net
trying host: mx01.bwc.na.blackberry.net

It tries about 8 hosts, which takes 5 minutes.
and finally says:
Message not accepted.

More often than not, this generally happens when something is blocking the packets from actually being sent. What's happening is that your system is connecting to the host, in this case nextel.blackberry.net. The reason it's trying so many hosts then failing is that once your computer is connected to the host, no packets are being sent from your system, so the host times out and fails over to a secondary connection address. Has anything changed on your system such as the antivirus, firewall, router, or anything else that may be blocking your system from sending the messages out? I've seen this happen with Norton Internet Security and McAffee Internet Security.

Don't you hate when you should have checked something, but didn't?

Works fine without antivirus, sorry for the trouble.

A better way to phrase it is "testing the failure legs"
