We currently have Pagegate v4 running on NT4 with IISv4. We use SMTP to relay pages into our Exchange server. I need to move Pagegate to a server with Server2003 and IISv6. When I try to start the mail service on the new server, I get the following error;
1/19/2004 12:34:14 PM Module Started
1/19/2004 12:34:14 PM Unable to start SMTP Server: Port already in use
1/19/2004 12:34:14 PM Another mail server is probably running on this computer
1/19/2004 12:34:14 PM *** Mail Server Service Started ***
1/19/2004 12:34:15 PM Time synchronized with scheduler
I have set the security and permissions to be the same on the new server as on the old. There appears to be some issue between IIS and Pagegate sharing the SMTP port. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, John.

Go into your Windows Control Panel, and then into the Services icon (possibly under Administrative Tools). Look in the list of services for the 'Simple Mail ...' service. Disable it. |

Well I must be missing something here. In the working version the messages are sent via SMTP to our exchange server for re-distribution. How are they going to be delivered if I kill SMTP??

The SMTP service I want you to disable is one Microsoft has installed on your computer. PageGate has its own SMTP engine built in. The PageGate engine can't start because another email server (the simple mail server service) already has port 25 in use.
I am assuming that the PageGate computer is not the same computer that is your Exchange server. |

Ok thanks for the explanation, I disabled that service. I was able to manually send a message via port 25 on the relay server that Pagegate is pointed at, but have not been able to get Pagegate to forward via SMTP. I do not have a connection to the paging system as we are still testing. Is Pagegate only going to forward the mail message if the paged message is successful?

If you are using the 'Forward To' setting under the recipient, then the message should be forwarded, regardless of the outcome of the page.
In PG Admin got to 'Logging' -> 'GetMail' -> 'SMTP Outgoing'. Do you see any activity there? If so, can you post it here. |

I have had it working on the 'old' server for a long time, and set up the new one the same. The SMTPout.log file is not even created.

Could you please check one more setting:
In PG Admin, go to 'Program' -> 'Settings' and make sure you have a check mark in 'GetMail' in the 'Run on this server' section.
If it wasn't checked, then stop and restart the PageGate server program.
If it was already checked, then please give our tech support a call. This is somthing else that isn't very obvious going on. |

Tech support has been in contact with the customer and have resolved the problem. There were actually two problems contributing to the failure.
1. PageGate's GetMail module wasn't installed or running as a service. The easiest way to resolve a problem like this is usually to switch PageGate back to running as an application, and then back to a service again. This is done with PageGate running and by going into PG Admin and choosing 'Program' -> 'Settings'
2. The IIS web server process didn't have enough rights to allow the webgate.exe CGI program to create the necessary temporary data files. This was resolved by giving the IUSR Windows account modify rights to PageGate's 'CGI Data Path' folder. |
