Hi Gang:

We have a few recipients on our Pagegate 8.x server who are all of a sudden not receiving pages from Pagegate.

In the Pagegate connector when I send a test page to a US Cellular number, I see:

Trying host: av1.mx.uscc.net
Connected to: av1.mx.uscc.net
Disconnected - State: Error

Pagegate then tries connecting to av2.mx.uscc.net, sc1.mx.uscc.net, and sc2.mx.uscc.net

All four connect but then immediate get disconnected. The message retry limit fails and pagegate marks the message as failed.

The format of the email of the recipient we are using is
10dignumber@email.uscc.net

I have also tried changing the email to the number @smtp.uscc.net and @uscc.textmsg.com

Same results there. Has anyone seen this or have any ideas on what may be amiss?

Thanks!
Drew

There's a test we'd like you to run from the PageGate server itself (it won't yield relevant results if you run it from a workstation):

1) In Windows, run a command prompt.

2) In the command prompt, type the following and hit enter:
telnet av1.mx.uscc.net 25

What response do you receive?

Hi!

When going to a command prompt on the Pagegate server and executing this command, I never receive a reply. I just get a frozen cursor. I suppose I should get a login prompt to the smtp server?

Thanks!
Drew

Just to double check, the command prompt goes to a blank screen with a flashing cursor and never replies with a "220" or any other type of code?

It looks like you may have a typo in the host name. You'll want to try to connect to av1.mx.uscc.net instead of av.mx.uscc.net

No response on the server when telnetting to av1.mx.uscc.net 25

However, I also tried to telnet to mail.cwwsms.com 25 which is the server for another carrier we use in Pagegate. Messages sent thru Pagegate for it are working with no problems.

But it also gets a Could not open connection to the host on the Pagegate server when I try it from a command prompt.

So, that's puzzling!

Drew

Drew,

Let's try a test to a different host to see what the response is. If you would:
telnet smtpin02.vzw.a.cloudfilter.net 25

Do you get a 220 response or a 'could not open a connection to the host on port 25' response?

Ah-ha! There's the bit of information we needed. Based on that response, it looks like the public IP your PageGate server sits behind has managed to end up on at least one naughty list.

You'll definitely want to go to the link provided to determine why the IP is on the Spamhaus lists but you'll also want to go to www.whatismyipaddress.com and use their "Blacklist Check" utility to see if it's on any other lists as well.

Once the IP is cleared from the block lists, your traffic should be allowed through again.

That ended up being part of the problem! I think I've got that resolved now. But, from the server, if I telnet to US Cellular's SMTP server on port 25, it takes it about 40 seconds before I get the welcome greeting of ESMTP and the connection is there. None of the other carriers take this long. Agonizing! Same results whether hitting av1, av2, sc1, or sc2 .mx.uscc.net

I think this long of a wait is causing the Pagegate connecter to have problems, like a time out or something.

Is there somewhere in Pagegate that I can tell it to wait longer for the SMTP server to respond for US Cellular?

Thanks!
Drew

To double check, which version and build of PageGate are you using? to find out, open PG Admin and it should be in the lower left hand corner of the splash screen and will look something like 6.x.x, 7.x.x, 8.x.x, etc.

Drew,

There's an updated build of the connector that has a new setting to allow end users to control the time-out value.

If you would:

1) Download the updated connector:
https://www.notepage.net/download/dev/pgdial1.exe

2) Open PG Admin.

3) Expand 'Connectors', right click 'Connector 1' and select 'Stop'.

4) Copy the file from step 1 in to the PageGate program directory, overwriting the existing file.

5) Right click 'Connector 1' and select 'Start'.

6) Go to Connectors - Connector 1 - Template.

7) Specify the following in the 'Settings' section:
SMTPConnectTimout = NumberOfSeconds

For example, this would increase the timeout to 40 seconds:
SMTPConnectTimout = 40

8) Click Apply.

If you need anything else or if that doesn't work as intended, please let us know.

Gotcha...and if we use connector 2 as well, I'd just need to copy the same file to pgdial2 in addition, right?
