Hi folks, newbie poster, so please be gentle

Up until just recently, our PageGate v5 instance was working beautifully, however recently it stopped sending pages.

Here's a rundown of our setup:

Host: Server 2008 Std
Modem: 56k on COM1. It's a NetComm Series 9 SmartModem56 v.90
We're using TAP to Telstra (Australia)
Carrier communication parameters: 9600, even, 7, 1
Init string: AT&FQ0V1X4&D2N0+MS=V32
Phone number: 125107

Connector 1: uses same init string, dialing prefix 0

We have no problem connecting to the modem, and it dials the carrier and connects fine. But every message it sends gives the response Bad ID or message content. Message aborted.

It then permanently fails and hangs up.

Here's a transcript (identities changed to protect the obvious):

This happens no matter the recipient, and I'm testing using the Send Message function to Recipients.
I have also tried using our monitoring system to generate a test file, which processes fine but still fails to send with the exact same issue.

I can't for the life of me see why this fails now, is it me or should this be investigated with Telstra?

Can anyone provide assistance please?

First, welcome to the forum! We try to be gentle around here.

Second, unfortunately, the rejection is coming from the carrier's terminal. So, the initial call and handshake go fine and the two systems can connect and the TAP negotiation is going step-by-step through the process until you're passing the phone number to send to, which the receiving terminal is rejecting.

I would recommend trying to reach out to Telstra to see what they can tell you about why the terminal started rejecting your ID's.

Thank you, I was really at that point of making sure everything about our side of the fence was okay.
I appreciate the confirmation, we'll begin the wonderful task of reaching out to Telstra.
Wish us luck (we'll need it!).

Just in case it becomes relevant, you may also want to consider updating to PageGate version 8 and using cellular hardware to deliver your SMS.

There are really three ways to send SMS: TAP, Internet, Cellular Hardware

TAP is a legacy protocol and one the program still supports but carrier support for this protocol has diminished greatly over the years. For example, of the major US cellular carriers, only Sprint and AT&T still have functioning TAP systems; Verizon sunsetted theirs more than a year ago at this point. I'd recommend moving away from this protocol if possible because it seems to be just a matter of time before the other carriers follow suit.

With regards to the other two methods of delivery, internet and cellular hardware, there are benefits and drawbacks to either method of delivery.

For example, most carriers in the US and Canada support at least one internet protocol as a free, public access gateway. However, of the available internet protocols to use, most carriers also only support the least reliable and least efficient method of internet delivery (SMTP/Email) for free, public access. While there are more efficient protocols available, they're usually part of a paid enterprise messaging system and generally are not available for free public access. Also, using your internet connection to send messages makes PageGate reliant on your internet connection; if the internet ever goes down, PageGate won't be able to deliver your messages.

Cellular hardware, on the other hand, does not rely on your internet connection and provides a cellular connection of its own. Cellular hardware is the single most reliable and efficient method of sending SMS as you're interfacing with hardware that allows you to send and receive SMS in the same manner as a cell phone. This means that nothing short of hardware failure or the cell towers in your area going down would prevent your messages from going through. This is the method of delivery we recommend for high priority traffic such as messages to EMS personnel, fire fighters, police officers and other types of critical messages. The drawback is that cellular hardware must have cellular service, which does mean that the device(s) will need a cell plan with texting.

It's also possible to turn an Android phone in to a cellular modem with NotePage's new Android SMS Gateway App. When the smart phone is connected by wifi to the same network as the PageGate server, this app grants PageGate access to the smart phone to send and receive text messages through the device. It is important to note that all carrier rules regarding sending text messages for the cell phone plan on the phone apply.

So, even if you can't work things out with the Telstra TAP system, there may be many ways to move forward with what you want to send, it's just a matter of determining which method is best for your implementation.
