We’re looking at using a cellular USB modem to directly send pagegate messages. We would like this to be the primary path and fail-over to TAP, SMTP, etc depending on the carrier. Also with the added device would it be possible to receive SMS messages sent to the modem in the client? Looking online I only find limited documentation describes this process but seems to indicate it’s possible. Anyone using the application in this fashion and can provide recommendations on the modem hardware and setup?

Thanks in advance,
Rich Bessette

It depends on how you mean the question. The people who receive the messages via cellular modem can reply to those messages and those messages will go to the cellular modem. PageGate can listen in for those replies and send them to whatever recipient or group within the program is appropriate for the replies to go to. It cannot, however, deliver those messages to the GUI Client.

As far as the hardware is concerned, most of our clients have reported to us that Multitech cellular modems are quite reliable. As far as the software, here's what you'll want to do:

To configure PageGate to use the Cellular Modem:

1) Open the PG Admin.

2) Go to Connectors - Connector 1 - Settings.

3) Set the 'Serial Port' field to match the COM port of the modem.

4) Click on Apply.

5) Find the Carriers heading on the left hand side, then right click on it and select 'Add'.

6) Name the carrier: SMS

7) Set the following:

Protocol: GSM-AT
Baud Rate: 115200
Parity: None
Data Bits: 8
Stop Bits: 1
Init String: AT+CSQ (you will need to type this value in the field)

8) Click on Apply.

Now that we've told PageGate how to use the Cellular Modem, we need to tell it who to send to. Here's how to add Recipients:

1) In the PG Admin, on the left hand side, right click on the Recipients heading and left click on Add.

2) Name the Recipient.

3) Set the carrier to: SMS

4) In the ID/PIN field, enter the 10 digit cel phone number with no spaces or dashes (ex;7818290500).

5) Click on Apply.

To configure the program to read in SMS replies from the Cellular Modem:

1) In the PG Admin, go to Connectors - Connector 1 - 2-Way

2) Check 'Enable GSM-AT Replies'

3) In the Reply Recipient section, select a Recipient or Group that these messages should go to.

Now, there is a slightly more advanced setup you can configure that would allow the program to delineate different replies to different people but that configuration does require PageGate's GetAscii module to function properly.

We purchased the modem and successfully sent sms messages via the device. We have three connectors and connector 1 was setup as described and connectors 2 and 3 are modems for TAP messages. It seems that if we have multiple SMS recipients the system tries to use connectors 2 and 3 and goes into a loop. Is there a work around for this behavior or did I do something wrong?

The easiest thing to do would be to set a Dedicated Carrier value for Connector 1. Set the Dedicated Carrier to your GSM-AT carrier. That tells the program that any message queued for that carrier should ONLY go through Connector 1.
