PostPosted: Thu Apr 18, 2013 10:46 am    Post subject: How set up Pagegate on a VM with Multitech MTCBA-G2-EN2? Reply with quote

Could someone please advise how to setup the above?

I have the following setup:

Solarwinds Orion running on a Windows 2008 R2 VM (VMware ESXi 5.0).

PageGate v.6 with GetASCII.

HW Virtual Serial Port installed on COM3 and pointed to the IP of the below Multitech device on port 5000.

a Multitech MTCBA-G2-EN2 gateway with a SIM inserted and an IP for the Ethernet interface on the same subnet as the Solarwinds/Pagegate server. Serial port on device not connected.

PageGate settings:

Carrier:

GSM-AT
115200, N-8-1
Init String: [blank]
Max Chars: 160

Connector:
Init String: AT+CSQ
Dialing Prefix: [blank]
Serial Port: 3
Direct Connect: off

Can someone please advise how I should configure the Multitech device and Pagegate to allow the latter to send SMS? I have not seen any options for entering SMS carrier settings. All I've done is set an IP address and disable PPP.
I know GetASCII works, as I previously had it working on a USB 3G dongle.

It's also worth mentioning that I can telnet to the Multitech device and issue the AT+CSQ and AT+CREG? commands with success responses.

Thanks in advance,
Stefan

From the PageGate side of things, you have everything configured properly. Can you post an example of the Connector log so we can see what happens when the program tries to put the device in to text delivery mode?

Interesting... that means that the modem isn't responding on COM 3. Is that the port that Windows states the device is assigned to?

Well, that's the port Windows claims the virtual serial port is using, and that in turn is what I pointed PageGate to.

Ignore me - I was being an idiot. Rather than using a 3rd-party virtual serial port, I added a VMware one, pointed it to telnet://<multitech IP>:5000 and changed PageGate to use COM1. It works perfectly now.

Well, it was working perfectly on my test VM. Now I've setup the connection on my live server, it sends 1-2 SMS, then hangs the modem. All settings are identical. Does anyone have a complete list of setup instructions for getting this to work, please?

Is it exhibiting the same behavior where PageGate is issuing the reset requests but not receiving a response?

Try this:

1) Stop PageGate (it will take a couple seconds for all services to stop)
2) Open the COM Port with PuTTY (or HyperTerminal)
3) Make sure you have the serial connection set to 115200 baud rate
4) Type: AT

If you get anything OTHER than "OK" - it means that the virtual COM port is not properly installed

Thanks OzCom. The weird thing is that it used to work on my test VM, but now when I try it on either the test or the production box, the PuTTY session just hangs. The VM serial port settings are as follows:

Use Network
Client (VM initiates connection)
Port URI: telnet://<IP of MTCBA-G2>:5000

As far as the MTCBA-G2 goes, I have only configured two things:
IP Setup > General Configuration > IP Configuration
IP Setup > General Configuration > Auto Dialout Configuration > Autodialout Login > Disable.

Everything else is as per default configuration. Am I missing something?

I believe the issue is the Virtual Serial Port - if PuTTY is hanging, that indicates that you cannot open the COM port. Also, you will NOT be using the IP Stack of the device at all - SMS traffic is not "data" in the eyes of the carriers. SMS traffic rides in empty spots on the control channel (sort of like the "D" channel on a PRI span")

So if I'm not using the IP stack, how would I get Pagegate to talk to it? AFAIK, the latter requires a COM port for the Connector. NotePage support advised me I should configure a GSM-AT carrier.

When you set up a carrier that uses the GSM-AT protocol - PageGate communicates the message to the modem by sending "AT" commands through the COM port.

Here is an example of a successful session (NOTE: confidential info redacted):

Thanks. I'm going to experiment and see if any other protocol will allow me to communicate with the MTCBA, so I don't have to use a virtual COM port.
