Just about any modem will work with the program. However, many have trouble talking to the modems at some paging carriers. The modem that seems to work best with the carrier's modes is the US Robotics Sportster external modem.

The only time we require a "voice capable" modem is when you use the OPTIONAL getDTMF with PageGate.

getDTMF allows PageGate to ANSWER an incoming call and send messages based on the DTMF sequence heard. I use this frequently when we need to give trext messaging capabilities to voicemail notification

What is the paging company that privides service to the F D pagers? Almost all of the paging companies offer WCTP or SNPP access. This is MUCH faster than TAP over a modem. Nottepager Pro and PageGate have the ab ility to use these protocols

Is that sent over ethernet? I am not familiar with the paging functionality on the other end - I just know we can dial to a number provided and send a page. We do not have access to the back end infrastructure.

Yes - SNPP and WCTP are both internet protocols. ALL of the Public Safety agencies I install PageGate for use them for pagers and use their modems as an automatic TAP backup in the event the internet connection is down

What do I need to do or know to connect with that functionality? VS having to buy a modem and dial a number?

IF you are using Notepager Pro or PageGate - all you need to know is the paging carrier's host information.

A very detailed list can be found here:

SNPP: http://www.notepage.net/snpp.htm

WCTP: http://www.notepage.net/wctp.htm

I will try to contact them and find out but it is the linn county sherrifs department - dispatch that sends the pages out for us. they provided a phone number to call - enter a pager ID and sned the information to. I beleive that is hosted internally to the Sherrif's dispatch center.

If the LCSO is running PageGate - they can configure it with an optional module that will allow them to RECEIVE traffic for processing via SNPP

I've set up plenty of clients with a USB modem. Just don't use a US Robotics 5637 on anything other than Windows XP and stay away from any Intel brand modems period.
