We have PageGate installed on the same machine as as our Solarwinds NPM Orion server and it is receiving alerts and intiating outbound paging without a problem on objects which we actively poll and monitor. However, there are a number of objects which we do not actively poll yet from which we do receive traps. However the Solarwinds Trap Monitor application does not have an alert action option to send data to the PageGate application.

How do we setup an alert action in the Trap Monitor application to send data to PageGate?

Is PageGate installed on the same computer as the Orion monitoring system?

You can use PageGate's Getascii module to get Orion to use the NotePage Alerts function. You do need to be licensed for the Getascii module to work, naturally:

Create a new directory on the root hard drive called ascii (c:\ascii\)

Go into the PageGate Admin.

Go to Interfaces - GetAscii - Settings.

Set the polling directory to: c:\ascii\

Put a check in enabled, click on Apply.

Tell it yes to enable the service for all existing groups and users.

Go to the Program - Settings section of the Admin.

Under 'Run on this Server', put a check in Getascii and click on Apply.

Ok. We are already configured for an ASCII receiver and the Solarwinds Trap Receiver has the ability to generate alerts in text format into whatever directory we like so it looks like this will work for us. However I have two follow-up questions on this same issue:

Is there a filename and extension requirement for files placed in the ASCII folder?

Once the ASCII reeiver processes a new file in its directory, does it delete the file or move it elsewhere?

Not really, no. The way it generally works is that Orion passes the commands directly to our sendpage.exe file, which then creates a file that's read in by the processing portion of the GetAscii module.

Once it's finished processing the message, it deletes it.

Well....while the Orion Network Performance Monitor supports PageGate and takes care of everything for you...their Trap Receiver does not. The "Send to Pager" option is not available in that particular application. However it does support "Send to File" and we can specifiy the destination directory, the filename, and the file contents. This is why I need to know if the filename must be a specific name and/or extension, and if the contents of the file must contain or omit anything specifically.

Ohhh, now I understand. I didn't realize the Trap Receiver didn't use the NPM.

Can you send an example of the file output to support at notepage dot com? The reason I ask is that the Trap Receiver file may have a non-standard format to it. If it does, you'll need to configure the Advanced Ascii settings, which I'll be able to figure out from the file.
