So, companies get these numbers from the wireless carriers, but then is there software to receive the incoming messages, or are these messages sent to someones phone?

How are these various company's aquiring these 5 to 6 digit text messaging numbers? For example, Z100 (a local NY radio station) says to text message all the requests to 55100. Can somebody please tell me how these are acquired?
