Cellular telephones, or "cellphones", are an important part of modern society. When "Miss Manners" wrote about good manners and etiquette, mobile phones did not exist nearly to the extent they do in our society today. In an effort to assist cellphone users, we have written up some guidelines to help people use their mobile phones appropriately while navigating in polite society.

Screening Calls
If you are going to "screen" your incoming calls (i.e. using the CallerID feature to see who is calling before deciding to answer the call or not), do not be blatantly obvious about it. Colleagues and friends could easily be offended, and if done in their presence, they may make the assumption that you also screen and avoid their calls or assign their calls a lower priority when they are trying to reach you and you are with someone else.

Faking Dropped Calls
Everyone knows that cellular coverage can be spotty at times, but do not make the mistake of intentionally fabricating a "poor coverage" situation simply so you can disconnect from a caller. While it may be humorous at times, eventually callers will catch on to the ploy and be angry about their dismissal.

Keep It Clean
When you are on a cellphone, you often don't have the benefit of privacy, so keep the topics you discuss G-rated -- you never know who may be listening to your side of the conversation.

Keep The Volume Down
Be respectful to those around you. Your phone conversation is not any more important than the live conversations occurring around you. This is especially important to remember since most people tend to unknowingly talk a bit louder when using their cellphones. So keep your vocal volume down, or excuse yourself and find a private place to talk.

Ringtones
Ringtones should be business-appropriate. While you might find a raunchy or vulgar ringtone humorous, those around you may not... and especially in a "business" situation. Ringtones featuring loud music or unusual "noises" are also s ...

PostForum: General Questions and Announcements   Posted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 7:55 am   Subject: Why Recycle Cell Phones?
Cellular phones and other mobile devices often contain toxic materials that can pollute the environment. The chemicals contained in the cell phones and electronics are harmful to the health of both humans and animals. Cell phones and their accessories contain a large number of hazardous substances known as Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic Chemicals (PBTs). Some of the chemicals contained in the PBTs have been known to cause damage to nervous systems, reproductive systems, and developmental systems, as well as causing cancer.

When recycled properly, the materials can be put back into circulation, reducing the health risks to the community. The materials that are contained in old cell phones can often be recycled and reused to make a variety of other products. Additionally, in order to comply with environmental protection regulations, many countries have very specific requirements and methods for disposing of cell phones, batteries, and other toxic items. Rather than wrestling with disposal guidelines yourself, it is often much easier to just sell or donate old cell phones to a company qualified to recycle them.

Today's society is all about being connected 24/7. Cell phones now provide instant access to anyone and everyone, from corporate executives to housewives and children alike. While cellular connectivity is a comfort to some, it can be rude and disruptive to others. You may wish to be available at all times, but there are some times when it is simply not appropriate to use your cell phone.

Also, cell phones should not be treated as status symbols, and should not be paraded out simply to impress others. Regardless of how new and impressive your cell phone may be, dragging it out in a public setting is seldom going to win you any fans.

Follow these simple cell phone guidelines to strike a balance between accessibility and consideration for others...

Movie Theaters
When you are in a movie theater, respect others around you who are there to actually watch the movie and are trying to listen. Turn your phone off completely, or at least switch it to vibrate only so as to not disturb the other movie-going patrons.

Restaurants
When you are dining out in a restaurant, those you are with deserve the courtesy of your attention. It is rude to your guests or companions to speak to or text others while you are dining.

Appointments
When you have a professional appointment, whether it be an appointment with your hair dresser, doctor, etc., it is time to give the phone a break.

Hospitals
Hospitals often restrict the use of cell phones in specific areas, because the cell signal could possibly interfere with electrical equipment used to maintain life support or monitor the health of patients. Be respectful and courteous of hospital rules that dictate the use of cell phones.

Live Performances
When attending live performances, whether a play, a speech, or a musical presentation, have the courtesy to turn your phone off.

Religious Ceremonies
Whether at a church wedding or a funeral, the cell phone should be muted. Regardless of your religious affiliation, when ...

PostForum: General Questions and Announcements   Posted: Thu Jul 09, 2009 6:55 am   Subject: Tips for Businesses Going Green
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A business that makes the decision to be environmentally-conscious will often promote goodwill among potential customers, while making the world a better place for future generations. Many businesses hesitate to adopt green practices because they fear it will hurt their bottom line and negatively impact profits. But many eco-conscious businesses discover that they can actually save money and bring in new customers who specifically patronize companies that actively make an effort to be environmentally friendly. Many customers may even be willing to pay a bit more for a product or service from a company that is green.

Many businesses already do things that are eco-friendly, not necessarily because they are sensitive to green living, but simply to save money. That does not, however, diminish the value of their green efforts. The trick for businesses is to be eco-friendly without compromising profitability.

Here are a few ways to help develop a "green" business strategy...

Telecommuting
Implementing a telecommuting program for employees can often have additional benefits beyond simply saving money on gasoline and reducing transportation-based emissions. Allowing alternative working arrangements for employees, such as allowing them to telecommute and work from home, even if only on certain days, will often result in those employees being more productive, and it will also serve to endear them to your company

Electronic Invoices, Statements, And Quotes
You can not only save money on postage, but also cut down on the use of paper by converting routine business documents such as invoices, statements, and quotes into an electronic format such as PDF, and then delivering them via email when possible. That is far more "green" and much cheaper than the traditional method of printing them on paper, putting them in an envelope, and mailing them via the postal mail service.

Dow ...

PostForum: General Questions and Announcements   Posted: Sun Apr 19, 2009 9:40 am   Subject: Free Website Critique Webinar
Have your company website reviewed, analysed and dissected by two online marketing specialists - live, in public and for free.

Sharon Housley of NotePage, Inc. And Dave Collins of SharewarePromotions have been running their live website critiques at software conferences around the world for many years.

With a combined 25 years of marketing experience between them, Housley and Collins have worked extensively with a wide range of different products, websites and markets, and know how to optimise a website to the greatest possible effect.

On Wednesday April 29th at 5:00 PM UK time (12:00 Eastern, 11:00 Central), Housley and Collins will be hosting their first Website Critique Webinar. Participants may choose to sit passively, soak up the information and enjoy the show, or if they're brave enough, can offer their own website for dissection.

Subjects to be covered will include the initial impression created by each website, structure, navigation, communication, sales process, SEO setup and more.

Attendees should note that while the main aim of the webinar is to share feedback and provoke new ideas, the tone and approach of these sessions is extremely informal and sometimes entertaining. Those who are easily offended by criticism should not submit their website for appraisal.

The webinar will take place on Wednesday 29th of April.

Registration is free but availability is limited. Further information on the webinar, panellists and how to register may be found at http://sharewarepromotions.com/website-critique.html.
